TIFF photos appear black in Preview, Finder, and Photoshop

I'm using El Capitan 10.11.6, but this problem appeared in earlier releases. I have some very large 16-bit TIFF files that will appear normally and then turn black when opened. If the file is on the desktop, it will also appear normal, then turn black in the Finder once it's been opened. No relief in Preview, Quick View, Photoshop, or Affinity Photo.

This is occurring on my iMac 27-inch (late 2013) with 3.5 GHz Intel Core i7 and 32 GB of RAM.

I've seen discussions of this on forums elsewhere, but no one seems to have a clue what causes it.

Anyone?

I posted a screenshot of a 105MB Tif in Preview but apparently it was taken down for some reason.
