iPad onscreen keyboard is inserting letters which are adjacent to what I'd typed

Hi,

I was just wondering if anyone else has come across a particularly annoying bug in the iPad onscreen keyboard where it will insert a letter which is adjacent to the one you actually intended to type? (For instance, the word 'else' I typed above had come out as 'elae', and 'thanks' can come out as 'yhanks') This has happened to me, across all applications, in all versions of iOS 9 I've tried (which is all versions from iOS 9.3 onwards). I'm using an iPad Air 2. Thanks all, cheers,

arko2

Hi, apologies for this slightly belated reply. I think I too had initially thought that it might be an error on my part, but it has now happened so much, across so many apps, that I'm totally sure that it's an error with the software. It's good to know that you're experiencing this problem too though (that I'm not the only one)... about your idea of trying to repeat a problematic word to see if it will repeat the same mistake, I have indeed been able to get it to misinterpret the same word twice in a row: in typing the word 'software', it interpreted this as 'softeare' twice consecutively. And, in the past (although on a slightly different version of iOS 9, maybe iOS 9.3.2), when I've tried to type the word 'table' into a Word document, three times in a row it's been interpreted as 'yanle'.

I'd be interested to know what you find after examining your typing for a while, to see if it's a human error or if the software is also buggy for you as well?

Obviously somethings not right. Lets start with eliminating some possibilities. Go to settings> general> keyboard> and turn off all the settings. Take a screenshot of your keyboard settings first to make it easier to turn back on the right settings. Now give the keyboard a try by replying to me. Please leave the extra letters in if it's still happening.

... it *seems* that unfortunately SwiftKey seems to suffer from the same key mis-recognition bug as the stock Apple keyboard ...

In my experience, this narrows it down to either:

  • fat finger syndrome
    OR
  • a hardware problem

although your theory about deep-down shared code may have some validity, one would think that LOTs of folks would complain about it if it was the case.

I would take to a Genius and demonstrate the issue.

It is wise to make a reservation >

a-Hola, amigo

Interesting... I'll try thinking outside the box...

I wonder if arko2 could tell us:

  • if sure that the preceding event was upgrading to iOS 9? (gotta ask, since 'cause & effect' plays 99% of the time)
  • all keys? a few? just the ones illustrated earlier? (a for s, y for t)
  • which key does the other character (to left or right of intentional key) ?? or does it vary?
the illustrations are BOTH - a is left of s, y is right of t
This evidence, meager as it is, lends credence to "fat fingers" theory - whatever the cause
  • what does the "suggestion" bar do when, for example, "yhanks" happens?
Could some "automatic corrective setting" be toggled like all Keyboard settings off tried?

I LIKE the idea of testing other keyboards. Like trying a different browser when something misbehaves in Safari.

It is always possible that it could be coincidental with a hardware failure, I suppose. A visit to the friendly folk at the Genius Bar?

Hi Bob, thanks for this suggestion. In the reply I'm writing to you now, I have disabled everything in Keyboard settings, and so far there are no errors to report (if there had been any errors whilst typing this, I would have left them in as you suggested!). I will monitor this situation closely, and write back if any typing errors continue to occue (actually, I think that last word there was the first one, but the errors seem a lot more increquent now that I'd disabled all options!). [Obviously another error in the last sentence!]

You're welcome. I mis-read your first post thinking you were getting double letters, the one you typed and the adjacent letter. Rereading the thread it's just the adjacent letter. As it turns out I'm having the same problem. I thought the problem was not paying attention. I'm going to have to watch my typing closely for a while to see if it's a human or software problem.

Just an idea. If you see it type the wrong letter try repeating the same word a couple of times to see if you can make it happen again.

Aloha arko.

For me I'm starting to lean toward human error, but what a pain in the but having to watch myself type.

For you since it's repeatable it's very possible a software error.

The next step would be to try settings> general> reset> reset all settings. No data is lost but you'll have to re-enter your wifi passcode.

Have you tried one of the alternate English keyboards or possibly a third party keyboard like Swiftkey or Brightkey ?

'Tis not like there were no anomalies with some versions of iOS 9 - both iPad AND iPhone (SOME [added] iPhone seems to have been proven to have hardware damaged or flaw revealed in the monster thread(s) and explained HERE) [seems I recall 9.3 as the culprit, and arko's 1st upgrade from iOS 8 was to iOS 9.3 - with updates after continued to misbehave]

I read that arko had one of each - left of target AND right of target

You could make one of your regular visits to play with Apple toys and video yourself 😉

Aloha Bob, sorry for this late reply, I think it's possible that time zones don't match (I saw your message in the morning here in Australia but have only just had a chance to send a reply now)... It's interesting that you're leaning towards human error in your case... Personally, I have just tried one of your suggestions (I'm now using the US English keyboard instead of the Australian English keyboard), and, after typing with it for a little bit (both some test typing in Mail, and this reply I'm typing now), it seems that this problem is happening more or less as frequently as it was with the Australian English keyboard which I was using earlier... as it stands, the situation seems to be fairly workable (that is, if it stuffs up this infrequently, then I can probably live with it), but the next thing I'm going to try is to Reset All Settings, as you suggested, and, depending on how workable things are after that, I may finally decide to try a third-party keyboard like SwiftKey! Thanks again for your assistance, and I'll let you know how I go!

Aloha arko.

You're welcome and thanks for the update. CCC had an interesting point in that our incorrect adjacent letters were in the opposite direction. In my case if it is human error it makes sense. I'm left handed and type with only one finger on my left hand so instead of Bob I get Bib almost as if I didn't reach accross the screen far enough. I'll keep an eye on this. Please let me know how the third party keyboards work out.

Stay well. Bob

Hi ChitlinsCC,

Apologies for this late reply, I've just had some things to do! Just to quickly answer your questions, yes, it almost certainly started after the upgrade to iOS 9, as iOS 8 prior to that had been perfect (in this regard anyway)! It happens with all keys, and in fact can happen in any "direction", so yes, it varies! 🙂 (Interestingly, it can involve punctuation keys too, so pressing 'm' might insert a comma or space character). Also as an example, typing an 'i' might result in a 'u', 'k' or 'o'.

Also, about what the suggestion bar does when (for instance) the system recognises "thanks" as "yhanks", it seems to vary from time to time... sometimes it will correctly suggest "thanks", but at other times, only the left part of the quicktype suggestion bar will be active, just saying "yhanks" in double-quotes. Also, as Bob had suggested, I had indeed tried with all keyboard settings disabled, but, although this problem may have happened a bit less then, it did still occur.

I am just about to try reset settings to see if this makes a difference to the situation, but I apologise that some of my responses to what you'd asked had been a bit brief, because I've had to fight against the iPad a heck of a lot to send this reply, which has made the writing process really difficult (so I had to abandon previous drafts)! So I apologise for that, but thanks anyway for taking an interest and for your questions (hope my answers have been sufficient)!
