How compatible is the EVGA Nvidia GTX 1070 graphics card

Hi. I read that I could get a Nvidia GTX 970 graphics card for my Mac Pro (Mid 2010 - with El Capitan 10.11.5) but I am wondering if the 1070 is compatible also.....

* If I install drivers for the new card (whilst my old card is in place), can I just pop it in and away I go?

* Is everything required (apart from drivers) included in the box or do I need to buy extra cables?

* Where do I find drivers for the 1070 for mac, because I didn't see mac as an OS option on http://www.geforce.com/drivers

Sorry if these obvious questions, I am just aware that most people on here are more technical than myself and I want to avoid problems I won't understand how to fix.

Sierra has been out for months and Apple still hasn't attempted to work with nvidia to create drivers for the 10 series. Its not nvidia's fault. They are willing to create the drivers, but Apple isn't co-operating at all. This is absurd and needs to become a priority. It's been long enough. Obviously shows that Apple doesn't care about its customers after they've made their purchase.

the Reps can say whatever CYA they need to. The bottom line is Nvidia has access to OS X months in advance and the chipset for these devices are their doing. Despite that the MP is 7 years old and Apple is not going to continually support something that ended development years ago. Bizon and Wolfe make TB2 to PCIe3 external GPU devices for Mac that allow any new Nvidia card to connect to a Mac (externally), they also modify the chipsets and write their own drivers for Mac OS for most of these cards. If a kickstarter can do this why can't a multi-billion dollar org like Nvida do it?

Bizon now have a Thunderbolt 3 version. However their website specifically says the GTX 1070 is not supported under OS X presumably for the same reasons it does not work directly in a classic Mac Pro - that is the lack of Mac drivers.

I therefore am puzzled why you say they have done their own custom drivers.

Note: While in theory Nvidia could have written drivers for the GTX 1070 like they have previously for the GTX 980Ti it is a fact that Apple do have a nasty and unnecessary habit of putting road blocks in the way of third parties. As an example while the Mac hardware is capable of doing high-end audio standard like Dolby TrueHD and Dolby DTS-HD and this works in Windows via Boot Camp it is sadly not possible to do in OS X even with VLC and similar programs. Similarly audio via HDMI on an upgraded video card like a GTX 680 or an AMD Radeon HD 7950 is possible in hardware and via Windows in Boot Camp but again as standard not possible in OS X, yet another example is 30bit colour support aka deep colour, this again works in a Radeon HD 7950 in Windows via Boot Camp but not in OS X. These are all artificial Apple caused limitations unlike the fact older Macs do not support AirPlay which is down to a genuine hardware issue. The deep colour issue is particularly annoying since Apple have supported it on other Mac models with built-in cards. Showing Apple are schizophrenic over these sort of issues the Radeon HD 7950 is support for Metal API use.
