What happens if i turn off Photos in iCloud?

Hello everyone!

I received an Email that my iCloud Storage was almost full. I checked it and the only option that was turned on and took most of the storage was "Photos". Now I turned it off and got plenty of storage back.

Now here is my question:

Will i lose all of the pictures that were save with iCloud even though i saved them on my Mac in the "Photos" application?

I have 30 days to turned that option on again. But what happens if i don't turn it on after the 30 days?

Thanks for advices!

Cheerio!

How did you use iCloud Photo Library? Did you use "Optimize Storage"? Then quite a few of your photos are only in iCloud and you need to download them first to your Mac. If you did not use "Optimize Storage", all should be well.

See this Help page: https://help.apple.com/photos/mac/1.0/?lang=en#/phtf5e48489c

Stop using iCloud Photo Library

Important: If you decide to turn off iCloud Photo Library, first be sure to select “Download Originals to this Mac” in the iCloud pane of Photos preferences, so all your original photos can be downloaded from iCloud to your Mac. Be sure to allow time for your originals to download before turning off iCloud Photo Library completely.

  1. Choose Photos > Preferences, then click iCloud
  2. .User uploaded file
  3. Deselect the iCloud Photo Library checkbox to turn it off.

After you turn off iCloud Photo Library, the Photos app on your Mac can’t access your iCloud library, and any edits you make to photos on your Mac won’t appear on your other devices. Your library remains in iCloud and available to other devices that use iCloud Photo Library. To turn off iCloud Photo Library on all your devices, open the iCloud pane of System Preferences, click the Manage button, then click Photo Library. Click “Disable and delete.” Your photos and videos will be deleted from iCloud Photo Library in 30 days, unless you click Undo Delete before that time.

You could sign up for more storage for a month to consolidate your library. And after you rescued your photos cancel the storage plan again.

Is there an option to see which pictures are in my iCloud?

The Photos.app at www.icloud.com should be showing you the current content of your iCloud Photo Library, when you sign in with your AppleID.

if you're no longer storing photos in cloud they are gone from your cloud

After 30 day they are no longer retrievable from Apple on your cloud

if they are on your HD you they will remain there unless you use synchronization in both directions.

I'd move them to another folder or device and keep a copy if they are of any value to you.

As a word of warning, you may NOT get any warning and you may NOT get 30 days to retrieve your photos. I cannot stress enough that you should back up everything on your iCloud before disabling it because you may arbitrarily lose everything that was stored there. This literally just happened to me, so feel free to disbelieve it but don't say I didn't warn you.

Yes, if your iCloud Storage is full and you delete photos from your device, they will not be saved in Recently Deleted, but are deleted immediately, to free your iCloud storage instantly. After seeing a warning about lack of cloud storage, we have to save the photos on a computer, before doing any deletion.

Nope, sorry. I had plenty of space left and I never deleted photos from my device. All I did was tap the button that turned iCloud upload off for Photos and instantly 75% of my photos disappeared from my phone and there was nothing left on iCloud. No warning that this was going to happen. I repeat, there were zero warnings of any kind, not about lack of storage, not about deleting of content.

Use iCloud at your own risk.
