Remote app can't find Apple Tv

The remote app on my iphone/ipad can't detect Apple TV despite it being on the same wifi network.

My MBK can detect the apple tv through itunes and I can use airplay through it. However this does not me allow to control ATV like a remote.

The Apple TV Remote App on my iphone does detect ATV however it is useless because I need to pair it and obviously I can't do that if I can't control ATV.

Any suggestions?

Cheers

Are you using the 4th generation Apple TV with the new iOS Apple TV Remote app released about two weeks ago?

I believe the new Apple TV uses bluetooth for setup with an iOS device. The Apple TV and iOS device also need to be connected to the same wi-fi network. When you select "Set Up with Device" on your Apple TV, then get next to your Apple TV, like 1-3ft away, and unlock your iOS device and then wait for a message on your iOS device asking to set up your Apple TV. If the message does not appear, then lock your iOS device and then unlock it again and wait for the message to come up.

I just did exactly this because I had to restore my Apple TV 4 and set it up again, and it worked flawlessly.

I don't believe the OP's issue is about setting up the Apple TV using a phone, it's about controlling it using the remote app.
