I have an iPad Air and use iOS 9.3.4. I use IBooks 4.8. I have 13MB of available memory. I have many books on my iPad, all purchased from Apple. For some reason, books go to the cloud on their own. This happens sometimes when I am reading a book.
How can I stop books going to the cloud? This is very annoying
I had this issue as well, but found a fix. I would download books over wifi, but the next time I opened iBooks the books would need to be re-downloaded. I saw this while on and off of wifi, but it was of course more of an issue when only cellular data was available.
The fix: My iPhone was almost completely out of storage (this issue would probably affect iPads as well). After freeing up some space, downloaded books stay downloaded. I freed up 20%, but I imagine 10% would be sufficient.
My guess is that on devices with very little storage space available, iCloud tries to free some up by removing content you're not using at the moment, content that exists in iCloud storage. This is pretty smart on Apple's part, and is much better than hitting a hard limit in most cases. It's definitely inconvenient when a book you're reading is no longer available and you only have cellular data, but keeping some free space available should avoid this.
Unfortunately, no real solution as of yet.

The solution two pages ago does not work. My iBooks still upload to the cloud (off my device) even with the ‘keep originals’ setting.

Nope I have the same problem I download content onto my sons ipad so he can access his PECS books we have built for him onto to find 30 minutes later they are back in the cloud.
Hi. Thanks for restating the problem. I have this problem too. But for me it just started after the recent upgrade to ver 11. Now the downloaded copied of all my books and PDFs disappear. About every other day I need to redownload.

I have been working with video files and need to keep them on tap for me to use. I kept seeing
that they were being put back in the cloud.
You have to go to settings and do not allow I cloud to summarize photos
That seemed to stop the taking off data and information from Ipad to cloud
But it is typical of Apple to not differentiate between books, files, photos and whatever
Why does support keep asking about space? That is completely irrelevant. If I take a bunch of pictures on a trip, I don't expect my other files to be deleted before I can move those photos/delete the unneeded ones. Very unprofessional to be no solution answered to all of these people. Thank you for the users who answers the question for the "specialists."
Issue goes back to how the OS works. It will try to free as much space as possible for keep the phone work as supposed, eg. phone doesn’t run out of memory. Which is OK, but it would be still nice to be able to flag books to be kept on the phone depending on the capacity state. It is pretty much disturbing to notice they are in the cloud and you have to download it on the more expensive 3-4G or cannot read when no internet available. So this is kinda a feature request.
Purchased books from iBooks Store will alway appear there for you to re-download if needed.
Are you saying the books you've synced/downloaded are not in your iBooks app?
