Java S6?

I still find questions around the net where OSX asks for Java S6 with packages that aren't even using Java.

A great answer is here https://forums.adobe.com/message/5644234.

Do NOT install Java 6 or the Apple-fix for Lion or whatever. Install Java 8 (the SDK) and follow the instructions at the end of the discussion.

Get rid of the OSX message and use the new and safer Java 8 version.

The problem is two-ways. Apple isn't aware some products do not use Java.

Oracle refuses to implement the capabilities (and telling this to the OS) of its newer versions of Java.

And it isn't restricted to El Capitan but also works with older versions. Not sure which is the minimum (Snow Leopard?).

Details in the procedure may differ between versions.

MacBook Pro, OS X El Capitan (10.11.6)

OS X is not asking for Java 6 for itself. A third party app you have on your computer is, and the OS is displaying a note that it requires installing Java 6 if you want to be able to use that app. Or Java 8 for web apps that won't run in your browser without it.

You will never see this message otherwise since the OS itself has no need for any version of Java.

@Kurt. Read the discussion. In this case Adobe used Java in some early applications for the installer. OSX still thinks Adobe needs Java. No application needs Java. And the solution many "experts" mention is to install the fix (Java SE 6) from Apple. My point was to tell that this is a waste of time for this problem. If you need Java you know how to get it. But if you don't need Java otherwise than to get rid of the message/showstopper this is a far better solution. But the number of questions and imho wrong answers drove me to this post in the "hol van de leeuw" (dutch expression). Thank you for your answer. BTW it also worked for me with for example Eclipse.
