Typing strike-thru when using Safari
When posting a comment in an online forum when using Safari (OSX 10.11.6) - is there a way to type a strike-thru over existing text?

I have Pages v 5.6.2
But when I copied and pasted text from that forum into it, using Safari, and then applied the two strike-throughs to that text (by first clicking on it in Character Styles) - copying and pasting back to that forum in Safari, the strike throughs (as I said above in my 2nd (?) post, disappeared.
so....have I misunderstood what you're suggesting?
(btw: this is all a bit over my head - without pretty concise explanation - I'm lost).
oh...wait a minute....just re-read your last post Viking.....I'll try to try what (I think) you're saying...
"Are you clear about using the span/CSS styling while in HTML mode within the ASC editor?"
No! Never hear of it....but will investigate/report back....thanks
????¿¿¿¿????.....meaning: what's the consensus...am I chasing my own tail?
Should I be able to do it?
How are all those who post in that forum and often use strikethroughs, doing it?
All I know is that neither the Safari nor the Firefox reply message box contains a formatting strike-through.
Could it be that if those posters are using IE or Chrome....that that makes the difference?
But if the web site determines the formatting options - then wouldn't it be the same on all browsers?
Yes, all browsers will be the same. They should all properly display an older HTML strike tag, or the newer span command, line-through.
I went to the site you show, but didn't want to create an account to test how to do what you want there. Users have to be doing one of two things.
1) They are manually typing in the HTML or CSS commands to create the strikethough text.
2) Looking at your screen shot, there's an icon shown as < >. This is normal web usage to enclose a formatting command.
Do a test post there and try both. For manual, type these two lines, or just copy/paste them from here and see if either produces strikethrough text.
<strike>Strikethrough test.</strike>
<span style="text-decoration:line-through">Strikethrough test.</span>
To see if the icon provided at the site is for applying web formatting, type anything and highlight it. Click the < > icon and see if it gives you other formatting options not already shown (such as the bold, italic and underline icons).
Okay, like these forums, it's ignoring HTML commands typed into the editor with the correct < > symbols. Or maybe not. If you didn't actually submit the post, you can't prove whether or not either of those will work until you do. It doesn't change simply while typing.
However, like a lot of forum software, notice it used brackets instead. It's now expecting you to know the HTML tag you want to replace the letters HTML with. Change those both to strike so it reads:
[strike]Type anything & Highlight[/strike]
and post the response.
You're welcome. Sorry about the "submit" comment. Not at all intending to be rude. It just appeared you were waiting for the strikethrough to appear as if you had clicked a button in a word processor. The slow person here was me, not noticing the Preview bar above what you were typing. 😊
ᵺ < like that?
If so, go to your Safari menu bar and click Edit > Emoji & Symbols then type strike through then double click the strike through.
.
No, like what Roger shows below......(only that's not working for me in that forum)
You don't have to be in HTML mode to get strikethrough. That was typed after clicking the strikethrough button in the toolbar of the entry area.
Word processing formatting of text isn't the same as web formatting. The strikethrough won't carry over to a forum.
