Replacing current iphone with a new one. Backup / Restore Questions etc

Hi,

Im sure these questions have been answered before but I would be most grateful for any quick answers please.

So I have been offered a new iPhone from my provider to replace my current one and I am thinking that I will most probably accept the offer. With that in mind do I just need to backup my iphone onto iTunes and then when I boot up the new iphone for the first time select the 'restore iphone option' to ensure the same things I have on my current iphone will appear on my new one? Assuming this is correct does iTunes also backup apps?

In terms of my sim card I assume it is just my phone contacts (names and numbers etc) that are stored on there or are those details stored on my phone in which case what details would be on the sim card? Again is it just a case of swapping the sim card from one phone to the other?

Finally if I want to then trade, sell or pass on my current iphone how do I do that securely? Does a factory reset remove all of the current data completely from it and if so how do I actually go about doing a factory reset?

Thanks very much for reading this and for any answers provided!

There are two ways to backup, using iCloud, or using iTunes while connected to a computer:

Either method will work fine for your needs of moving to a new phone. Just make sure to enable to option to encrypt the backup if you use the iTunes method (this will ensure the your credentials and logins also are backed up).

You are correct that when you turn on the new phone, you will have a choice to restore from a backup. You should choose this and then select the backup you just made.

All of your user data that was on your old phone will be restored to the new phone. There are some things that are not included in backups for efficiency and size purposes (About backups for iOS devices - Apple Support). Apps are one such item that is instead just re-downloaded from the App Store as part of the process.

Your contacts are not stored on the SIM card but instead on either the phone's internal storage or in a cloud account. Therefore, either way, restoring from a backup will transfer them.

Neither Contacts nor any other user data are stored on an iPhone SIM card. It is only used for some carrier information.
