What is the best antivirus when running both OSX and Windows 10?

I have a new Macbook Pro running OSX El Capitan and Windows 10 through Parallels Desktop. I installed AVG Free on both the Mac and Win 10 sides, however, it seems to be really bogging down the Windows side - i.e., it is constantly "updating" and is driving me crazy. Questions - a) do I need to run an antivirus on both platforms? And does anyone have recommendations on programs that are better to use? I do have an active subscription to McAfee for Windows I believe that I could install instead.

Thanks for any input.

I am running Windows for specific applications, yes. I do occasionally open a browser window on the Windows side though, as the application I'm using (JAlbum) does this automatically when I update a photo album. Other than that, I also use it for updating a website created with a Windows application that doesn't have a Mac version. What I've decided, for the moment anyway, is to remove AVG from both sides and install McAfee Total Protection on the Windows side. Since there is some risk coming from that side I think it's best to have something but as John Galt said in his article, no virus protection protects you from yourself if you are out there doing dumb things - I've never had a virus on a computer mostly because I am ultra cautious about what I do - never click on popups, never download attachments I don't recognize or click on links in emails that I didn't request in the first place, etc., etc. Not to say that someone, at some point, couldn't trick me but I am very, very careful.

If you have become confused by some of the contributions to this Discussion, I suggest you evaluate each response on its own merits. The use of grammar can be particularly revealing, since automatic spell check and correction is available in literally every device capable of posting to this site. It's possible that some people don't know how to turn it on though, or perhaps they just don't care.

Details matter, and there are few subjects in which details matter as much as they do with computers and their security.

Hi John - It is indeed starting to get a little confusing and people obviously have strong opinions on the subject which is okay 🙂. I just didn't want to put anything on my computer that isn't necessary, especially given it is already pretty loaded with having two OS installed and limited hard drive space to start with. I took the AVG off both platforms and installed McAfee on the Windows side - hopefully that is a good compromise and as I said I am very, very cautious which is really the best defense there is.

I have a Win10/Firefox setup

I use the PAID version of

Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware & Internet Security Software

https://www.malwarebytes.com/

* a fellow user here - thomas_r - is Director of Mac Offerings at that company - and long before joining them had written the very widely recommended here

Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware Detection & Removal Software for Apple Macintosh Computers

for 'if and when' a Mac gets Adware/Malware

There is no PAID version of it = totally free

Well, I certainly seemed to have stepped into "it" this morning. For the now seemingly haters... Yes, I have opinions, as do you, I certainly have as much right to try and help other users, as do you. but to start the attacks for my opinion, well maybe that's another issue of what's wrong with the world today.

I would suggest that is an overstatement. Disagreements when discussing volatile subjects such as the utility of AV applications generate different opinions and such differences should not be interpreted as personal attacks. I will concede that the comment regarding typo's was perhaps not necessary, but that aside, I cannot see where any one attacked you personally but rather simply disagreed with your position(s).

Maureen, In the end, it's up to you which advice you take, or none at all. p

I have total agreement with you on this and the bulk of what follows in that paragraph. The final decision maker is not you or I, but the poster. Ciao.

For the others apparently now critiquing my spelling mistakes, noting that it brings my credentials into question (??) (yes I'm actually human). I like many actually suck at typing, even being on computers since I was 10 back in the late 70's on the Apple II and early 80's on Commodore 64, yes I never really learned to touch type.

Which is fine, neither did I. But my point was such basic errors do tend to erode confidence, as I'm sure you'll agree. So I simply asked you to elaborate on the experience you claim to have, just to offer reassurance.

You should check in a Windows forum about the use of McAfee. Windows 10 has built in anti virus software, Windows Defender. You should not run multiple anti virus programs simultaneously. Personally I use Windows Defender only. But once again, get advice for Windows protection from a Windows forum http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/protect_defender

Howdy Bob (gettin' any bites?)

I only use MalwareBytes on top of Win10 Defender - it is RARE for MwB to ID any threat - a few in emails (likely images) and a few web pages that have "content" that makes it bark.

I use Thunderbird as mail client... it apparently is pretty doggone picky about email content AND structure, often sandboxing the content until I make a choice - ASC emails are not immune!

No "infections" so far (knock on wood)
