After installing the latest security Update, and restarting, the system will advance to the login screen but freeze after I
type in my login code. I get a spinning gear and ultimately a spinning beachball which will not advance to open the system. Reinstalling the system did not fix this. Had to reinstall from a backup.

I've had this problem too. The solution is not quite simple, but much easy then reinstalling all from scratch:
