Latest Security Update crashes the system after restart

After installing the latest security Update, and restarting, the system will advance to the login screen but freeze after I

type in my login code. I get a spinning gear and ultimately a spinning beachball which will not advance to open the system. Reinstalling the system did not fix this. Had to reinstall from a backup.
