Cannot use cisco router in safari

Apple devices (iMac, iTouch, iPad, Mac Air) can no longer access menu items on my Cisco RV180 router; they all had access a few weeks ago. Firefox and Opera access the router without problem. The issue clearly is in Safari, across platforms, configuration.

I can log into the router, the lead page shows a list of links in the left column. The top item is "Getting Started", which does open, but only to a few router options. The rest of the menu (e.g., Status, Networking, Firewall) are all non-responsive to any clicks. Firefox did ask if I approved redirection for this lead page. I'm guessing that an upgraded security feature of Safari is preventing redirection from a menu item to an internal router web page.

Searching through all the Safari preferences and choices, and adjusting any possible switch has not resolved the problem.

Any advice would be most appreciated!

Have you tried restarting/resetting the router?

Yes, I restarted the router, but did not reset it. However, if the problem were in the router, it would also not work with any other browsers. The problem is isolated to Safari and the Cisco RV180 router.

I have not contacted Cisco support; maybe I should. I'm still focused on Safari, as I believe that Safari has been updated, but the router has not. As I recall, Cisco support is a pain to set up, and is expensive, but I'll check it out.

Found the same problem in Cisco Community threads:

In that note the following two errors are noted in Safari:

Sandboxing 'https://router2.ovwv.lan/platform.cgi?page=blank.htm' because it is using HTTP/0.9.

[Error] Blocked script execution in 'https://router2.ovwv.lan/platform.cgi?page=leftMenu.htm&date=Sat%20Aug%2...(CEST)' because the document's frame is sandboxed and the 'allow-scripts' permission is not set. (x2)

That suggests an RV180 firmware problem. Not likely that Cisco will fix it, as that model is now obsolete....

Nope that is not it. I just found other websites where Safari does not activate menu buttons, but Firefox and Opera will. Back to Safari....

Found more websites where menu buttons do not work, only in Safari. There is clearly a bug in the latest issue in Safari 9.1.3 and probably 9.1.2.

I have seen issues with Javascript on some of the websites I visit in 9.1.2/9.1.3.

Eric Root , I have tried your suggestions on the discussion I started several weeks ago. I was hoping 9.1.3 would fix most of them. There is an improvement, but not perfect yet. 😉

On the other hand, and as Safari works with other routers it could be a bug in the Cisco, and it wouldn't be the first.

Well, I just tried the first other site that failed to respond; this time, it did work properly. I need to do some more testing, and will get back to you. I have some ideas, but will put some data behind them first. Back in a while....

Made progress in understanding this problem. The other site that I noted an issue was at http://www.newegg.com -- when doing searches from "Power Search", any return to that window has the "Apply" button disappear. However, I now suspect that's a website problem.

I cold-booted my router, re-installed the last firmware that was available, and re-filleed the stored parameters from backups. Safari does not work, Firefox and Opera do.

I could not run an older version of Safari from Time Machine; the OS complained a lot about trying. However, I dug up my old iTouch that was obsolete years ago, and tried that Safari. That older version works fine with my router; my new iTouch does not.

Checking with my guru friends, "sandboxing" is a method of the router protecting itself from me, that it believes is an intrusion.

Conclusion? Safari now has some security features that fail to connect with some faulty firmware html code. Maybe Apple will allow me to adjust more parameters just for this problem. I'll keep this one as long as it works, and I can reach it using some browser.
