Apple E-Mail SMTP servers won't work correctly

Hi,

I need to use my E-Mails when I'm not at home and when I am home. My ISP is Optus which I know the mail server for (mail.optusnet.com.au) and I have my phone carrier with Vodafone and I know the SMTP server for that as well (smtp.vodafone.net.au). I can't get these two to work whenever I am at home and leave home. Does anyone know a solution?

I have the same issues and understand what the op meant - my problem is only when trying to use my iphone to sent emails via cellular (wifi is fine) when outside. I can receive emails but not send. My phone carrier is vodafone but the email accounts are with my own server and/or another isp. I have all the relevant log-in details and smtp details but can't get it to work either using the smtp server from my cellular carrier or the smtp settings of my email accounts. ( I am not using any vodafone email account).

For starters you should contact Oputs and Vondafone first and see what they say.

Your post is extremely confusing for many reasons:

  • Your post's title references "Apple E-Mail SMTP servers", yet the body of your post makes no reference at all to anything related to Apple's servers. Optus and Vodafone email has no relation to Apple servers.
  • "I can't get these two to work whenever I am at home and leave home." Does this mean they never work? Does it mean they only work when you are stationery somewhere outside of home? Does it mean they work over cellular data but not Wi-Fi? Does it mean they work on most Wi-Fi (all Wi-Fi outside home) but not home Wi-Fi?
  • You reference only SMTP servers. Does this mean you cannot send outgoing email but you can receive incoming email? Does it mean you can receive email all the time?
  • Your ISP is Optus and your phone carrier is Vodafone. Yet you mention a Vodafone SMTP server. Does this mean you have a Vodafone email account? Or are you trying to use a Vodafone server to transmit Optus email?

1) Sorry, I didn't mean it that way.

2) They work only when I'm either connected to wifi or on my cellular connection. I need to input the settings again for either Vodafone or Optus for only one of them to work.

3) Yes. I can receive other E-Mails but can't send them.

4) No. I have an IMAP server set up with netregistry and am trying to input the settings into my iPhone but it won't let me send E-Mails. The only time it works is when I re enter the settings as mail.optusnet.com.au or re enter them with smtp.vodadone.net.au.

Sorry about being confusing.

I think you are a little confused. You would only need to use the Optus SMTP if you are using an Optus email account. The same with Vodafone.

You should be using your email provider's SMTP server to send your mail. You need to contact them to see about settings and to find out if there are issues with sending while on your wi-fi at home and on your ISP, versus being outside of home and being on your cellular provider. Many networks require different settings for ports and servers depending on where you are sending from. This is to ensure that you have authenticated on the network server. Most of this has been corrected by SSL, and other authentication protocols, but we first need to determine what SMTP server you need to be using based on your email provider.

Here's my advice. When troubleshooting a problem, don't throw in so many variables. You'll confuse yourself and others who try to help. Start with 1 mail configuration. Forget about the other mail server for now.

Test it thoroughly:

- Turn off cellular, turn on WiFi. Test sending and receiving email thru home broadband (Optus)

- Turn off WiFi, turn on cellular. Test sending and receiving email thru cellular network (Vodafone)

- Test sending and receiving email thru other WiFi (public) connection

Make sure there are no problems. You can add another variable (Optus or Vodafone mail server) later when you're sure there is no problem with 1 mail server configuration. Let us know.

I would think not having accounts with Vodaphone or Optus will be part of your issue.

ESP's these days are quite vigilant about controlling SPAM and managing who can use their outbound email servers is a big part of that.

Has this worked before? Why do you feel this will work now?

I use these settings since I need to send E-Mails from out.

What does this mean?

How does netregistry not suit your needs for outbound mail?
