I rather buy me one or two MacMinis that run El Capitan and lock them away as a backup if my current machine fails than wasting months to migrate 800GB of Aperture Library to wherever. Aperture runs good enough on El Capitan. I put a system freeze on on the machine.
Basically, no it doesn't run.
but I still use it with struggle. (I'd move Lightroom, but I can't get the information that my IPTC data are moved into LR by LR's migration feature. I just put things in caption and keyword)
Invoking is OK.
Viewing is OK.
Changing to info. pane rises error dialog. and after some tries, you can change. but "Large Caption" menu vanished (maybe more, but I don't remember old menus anymore).
Changing to Adjustments pane also rises error dialog same as info. pane. I can't find what problems happen on adjustment screen, yet. I can do what I want in this area anyway.
Importing rises error dialog same as other cases. some import setting areas vanished. for example, meta data preset, etc. and time by time, areas were decreased, now I see no areas. In the import display, right side area is completely empty now. Anyway importing seems to work properly. I don't find any lack of images.
(I don't know well yet, so cautiously listen this paren. things here after. maybe true, maybe false:
After importing, Aperture asks "delete or keep?" I selected "delete", then "every images in SD" is vanished. Previously, only imported images are deleted. I keep some important images in a few months in SD, too as a supplementally backup. so there must be remaining images on the SD after I did "delete". yes I set duplicate important prevent option always. This might be affected by "vanishing import setting areas")
all case, error dialog is same as below:
Good to hear. I'm cautiously optimistic that Sierra will be ready in 6 months or so and Aperture will run at least as well as it does under El Cap.
I have been following this thread. I am a long time Aperture user with nearly 450,000 images managed in Aperture. About a year ago I began to evaluate options (Photos, Capture One Pro 9, and Lightroom cc). In the final analysis I decided to move forward with Lightroom. All my new images from Sept 2015 were managed in Lightroom and at the present time, both Aperture and Lightroom point to the same set of raw files.
For those of you with questions about LR, download the 30 day free trial and answer all of your questions directly. In my personal experience, while it is never easy in changing software and there is a learning curve, I have found LR cc to be significantly superior to Aperture in terms of image processing as well as database management.
All of my critical edits in Aperture were typically in tiff or psd so those come over into Lightroom as they were and for old pure Aperture edits, as long as Aperture runs, if I need them, I will go through Aperture, but when Aperture no longer runs, if I need to edit old files, LR is some much easier, that I will simply reedit in LR. I have also saved high resolution JPEG files of the final Aperture edits, just in case.
Two things: I would never reject Adobe code categorically and I would never buy deadend hardware/software configurations to preserve a Aperture functionally. Neither seem like a winning go forward strategy.
The « info » tab refuses to open and crashes Aperture.

Remember to file an official bug report with Apple.
If enough people don't complain, it may never get fixed.

Hi - good to hear about your experience going to LR. Have you found a workflow to put images you want inside the Apple system back into Photos? I want to be able to grab photos from my library for iMessages / Apps etc.
Grateful for any advice. Not much useful online sadly.
If you want to move pictures from LR--> Photos so you can have them reside in the Apple Ecosystem, you can email the relevant pictures to yourself and then drag/drop them into photos or message them directly from email. I have not tested, but I suspect you could also use LR publish services to a folder that you could also import into Photos.
Sadly so far it is not possible to drag/drop from LR to Apple services. This really effects me when I am working in Final Cut Pro. My work around is to use published services to a project folder and then drag them into Final Cut Pro from at the finder level. This approach works, but not seamless.
ok, I can live with the El Capitan glitches! I had a major problem editing with the zoom viewer engaged, if I switch from picture to picture (say I am looking for the best focus or facial expression) I make the application freeze. So like the old time doctor used to say.."if it hurts when you do that, stop doing it!" Now I disengage the zoom viewer and then reengage or wait while the picture loads before switching.
I had been told in the local store by one of the PHOTOS experts that they were sure that Sierra was no longer supporting Aperture.... glad it is still 'supported'
OMGosh, PHOTOS is still a joke for editing. worthless for me
Official support for Aperture ended with El Capitan. Considering how many people Apple has ****** off with this move, though, I would hope they'd be making some effort to avoid and/or fix any Aperture issues within reason. This is why it's so important for everyone to file a bug report. If you can't be bothered to file a report, then you have no right to be upset when they don't fix the issue.
HI Can I ask you a couple of Questions? I am about to do the same, namely import about a terabyte of photos from Aperture to Lightroom 5 Can you give me any tips on how to do it? I've pretty much reconciled that I won't be able to preserve the non destructive ness of aperture so I would probably just import all edited photos that are say flagged or starred Any tips?
Thanks for your time.
Ron
well geez freediverx01..lets be a bit less snarky...cuz 1. I was a BETA tester for El Capitan so that I could help identify glitches and 2. I have sent in about 3 million reports...lets not assume too much, ok?
I wasn't suggesting you didn't file a bug report. But a lot of people can't be bothered so I was using the opportunity to remind everyone why it's important to do so.
The first thing is make sure you understand how LR works with the catalog (same as Aperture Library). I spent about a month working on individual projects in Lightroom to learn basic Lightroom, but also to learn how it manages the image files. I have written a very short blog on my experience: http://www.e2photo.net/blog/long-overdue-update.html. But feel free to contact me because the blog does not include a lot of detail.
1. Make sure Aperture is up to date. I think it is 3.5.1
2. Make sure all the image files are referenced rather than managed in a structure that you are comfortable with.
3. Make sure there are no missing files
4. Make sure the Aperture trash is empty
5. Make sure to up date the previews to the largest size you want. (Lightroom will gather those previews as 'finished JPEG images call Aperture Previews).
6. I repaired the databases (not sure how critical this was but it seemed like a good idea)
7. I had multiple Aperture libraries (one for each year). So I imported each Aperture Library into a Lightroom catalog using the plugin in Lightroom. Once each year was imported, I then consolidated the individual Lightroom catalogue into one large catalog spanning multiple years.
7a. On the initial dialogue, make sure you are pointing to the correct Aperture Library and make sure you designate the your preferred location for copied images/video. This will mostly apply to Preview files, if you have made sure all of the images are referenced.
7b. There are a couple of very critical checkboxes to pay attention to in the Aperture-LR import dialogue box. First check the option button. If you want your Aperture Previews, check 'For Images which have been adjusted in Aperture....' and also check 'Leave referenced files in your Aperture....' The last check will allow both Aperture and Lightroom to point to the same original files, but more importantly will substantially minimize the size of the LR catalogue.
Others have described what will and will not come over. For myself, pictures fell into a few categories: junk, only Aperture edited, picture with complex editing (these were the ones I have slaved to get exactly as I wanted). The complex edited picture were most important to me and they were in tiff or psd format. These imported fine. I lost all of the Aperture edits, but after working with Lightroom for a couple of months, I realized that LR actually produced a better final result than Aperture so I decided I would simply redo simple edits in LR, if there was a need for a particular picture (or I could go to the Aperture Preview image).
My project had several purposes, but one of them was to pull together all of the personal/family work and separate out all the business related activity. I was able to consolidate all of the family stuff onto 3 16TB drives and I am happy to say that all of the combined business/personal drives have now been moth-balled with both Aperture and Lightroom pointing to all of the image files. So I really feel done.
