How do I use a blank DVD-R like a USB flash drive?

Hi all! I am running Mac OS X 10.9.5 on my MacBook Pro and I was wondering how I could use a blank DVD-R as a form of rewritable media for documents, music, spreadsheets, etc.? My mac let's me burn to the disc, however I can not rewrite to it after this. Please help!

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 13 inch mid-2009

They don't work that way. Rewritable simply means you can erase the disc and use it again. You cannot write to it during normal use of the disc. For that you need a USB flash drive.

To even be rewritable you need to use DVD-RW, not DVD-R. The latter is not rewritable. You could search for third-party software that does allow you to use the disc like a flash drive, but I'm not certain such software exists any longer. Not much need for it.
