iPhone Apple Upgrade Program Unlocked on AT&T?

Purchased an iPhone 7plus with Apple upgrade program on AT&T network. Is the phone still unlocked? Will I be able to just drop a European sim in the slot?

thanks

I believe so, yes. I just did the same but not on the upgrade program so I am not certain but my understanding is that all phones sold at the Apple store are unlocked.

This is what I suspected, however on my order page it says nothing about the phone being unlocked. I also noticed that the AT&T and Verizon versions have different modems, and I got worried that it might affect my phone when traveling abroad.

hopefully it will work

FWIW I noticed the same when I ordered mine but as I recall it said that it would work around the world in GSM networks, just not in the US CDMA. This article may help.

Unfortunately, through the Apple Upgrade Program you cannot buy the unlocked CDMA/GSM version which will work with all carriers if you are currently an ATT or T-Mobile customer. Since I'm considering switching carriers in the near future, I was unable to upgrade to the 7. This was a big disappointment for me personally. I felt that the biggest advantage of the Upgrade Program to me was being able to switch between the Big 4 at will.

I can confirm this. *****, basically if you buy the "Verizon" iPhone 7/7 plus your phone will support ALL carriers and can switch to anyone including AT&T. This is because Apple has the Qualcomm chip in it and can do CDMA/GSM, etc. Qualcomm was all Apple shipped for the iPhone 6s and 6s plus so those units are truly unlocked and universal. This year, for whatever reason, they added Intel as a chip supplier for the modem. The Intel chip does not support CDMA, plus recent stories have proven the Intel chip is significantly slower than the Qualcomm version. Google search iphone 7 intel vs Qualcomm if you want the details. The only other way to get a truly universal and unlocked phone is to buy it outright - full price (sim-free). Otherwise, your brand spanking new "unlocked" iPhone 7 only will work with AT&T and T-mobile. Bad Apple, bad AT&T - if it was them who forced the change.

My grown adult kids , my and myself play Pokemon Go. They all have iPhone 6s Plus's. My wife bought me a IPhone 7 Plus for my birthday. I called Apple the first week. They said they would work with me to correct the issue. I have owned the phone for about two months now. After many attempts with Apple support, they now say there is nothing wrong with my phone. I did the internet research and was disappointed to hear about what they did to the AT&T version of the phone. It is slower than the Icon 6S Plus. It has a slower (Intel) modem. The Qualcomm modems are excellent. Now as I understand, my phone is no longer universal because of this. I have purchased countless Apple Products from the original Apple computer, Apple 2GS (who remembers "Apple Works"), the second version of the Macintosh computer, many iPods (at least 8 of them), iPads (at least 5 of these), Apple TV and of course at least five different versions of iPhones (purchased at least 12 total phones). This has been my biggest disappointment with an Apple purchase. I understand that even good companies make mistakes. Great companies hold "themselves" accountable and make necessary countermeasures.

1. The cellular modem has no bearing on the speed or performance of the iPhone. That is handled by the A10 processor which is identical across all models.

2. The only difference between the iPhone's with a Qualcomm modem and an Intel model is the ability to connect to Verizon, Sprint and a handful of CDMA networks in China. Unless you plan on using the iPhone on one of these carriers, the iPhone is still as universal as any other.

3. I own an Intel iPhone 7, and its leagues better, faster and more responsive than my iPhone 6 ever was.

I suggest you read a bit more on what exactly your iPhone is before making baseless complaints. Also since you failed to tell us what the problems you are experiencing are, its hard to offer any suggestions.

Also this has nothing to do with the topic of this thread, which is for the Unlocked iPhone 7 for use with other GSM carriers which is the Intel based iPhone 7 is perfectly capable of doing.

1. True, the A10 processor is identical across the various carrier iterations, there are some LTE performance differences as outlined in the Cellular Insights article http://cellularinsights.com/iphone7/. While this wouldn't affect the speed of the actual phone, it could result in reduced download speeds for streaming or app downloading, etc. when the signal strength is reduced due to locale. This is just a side note to Apple using Intel for GSM only

2. For me personally, the biggest issue is universal usage. When Apple launched their 6s promotion (buy from us directly via 24 month installment )under our upgrade promotion, you can take your phone

1. True, the A10 processor is identical across the various carrier iterations, there are some LTE performance differences as outlined in the Cellular Insights article. While this wouldn't affect the speed of the actual phone, it could result in reduced download speeds for streaming or app downloading, etc. when the signal strength is reduced due to location. The appearance here is that the Intel version is inferior since it cannot keep up with the download speeds of the Qualcomm version.

2. For me personally, the biggest issue is universal usage. When Apple launched their 6s promotion (buy from us directly via 24 month installments), you were told you can take your phone to any carrier - you're buying an "unlocked" phone. This was certainly true for the 6s line, since all 6s's had Qualcomm modems capable of switching from AT&T to Verizon (for this example). This year, they still advertise an "unlocked" phone if you decide to trade in your 6s for a 7, but if you were using your phone on AT&T - the iPhone 7 is no longer universally "unlockable" depending on the version you get. I personally spoke to my local store senior manager, he admitted that Apple - nor his store - clearly explained to those who traded in their 6s's that happened to be on AT&T, that the iPhone 7 AT&T would not be able to be used on a CDMA network. Yes, there was some language in fine print, but I can totally understand why some folks who aren't locked into any contract - might want to switch to Verizon - only to find out they cannot with the AT&T iPhone 7 version. I have a friend who happens to work at a local Apple retail store, there are more and more people starting to come in complaining that they tried to switch to Verizon but are unable to due to the hardware change.

In summary, yes - it's buyer beware and everyone's responsibility to read the fine print. But in this case, just one year after heavily promoting the "universally unlocked" iPhone 6s, that's only possible on the iPhone 7 if you buy the SIM-free version (full price - not installments), or the Verizon version. Therefore, one version of the phone not only is more compatible, it apparently has a chip that allows faster downloading speeds - if you agree with the article from Cellular Insights (and referenced by many Apple-centric websites). There is a rumor that perhaps next year, the Intel chip will be able to support CDMA - but again this is only a rumor and does not help those who upgraded to an iPhone 7 AT&T/ T-Mobile version.
