Setting Up video input to Mac?

I have a JVC 4K video camera that I want to hook up to Mac. The camera only has HDMI output that will work. I want to hook it up to my mac, and have it detected to run through ProPresenter, so I can use it as a video source. Any ideas on how to set this up?

There are two approaches.

  1. Use a video capture card in the Mac Pro and capture the output from the video camera
  2. Record the video on the camera and then transfer the recording to the Mac Pro

The leading maker of video capture systems for the Mac is Blackmagic Design, see - https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products

The file transfer approach would depend on what data/computer interfaces the JVC has, it may even come with software specifically to facilitate this. In the past this used to be via FireWire aka. iLink as Sony referred to it, newer cameras may have USB ports. Some cameras may have Thunderbolt ports.

Note: The current Mac Pro has USB3 ports and a Thunderbolt interface but the old discontinued 'classic' Mac Pro cannot do Thunderbolt. The classic Mac Pro only has USB2 as standard but you can get a USB3 card or even a USB3.1 card.
