iPad no longer charges from Computer after update to iOS 10

Brian, I accept what you say but before an upgrade to IOS 10 my iPad charged OK from my computer and now it does not.

I also had no problems with charging iPad before iOS 10. Doing my own experimenting, I found that using a 5V - 10W adapter and an Apple Lighting cable or an Amazon Basic lighting cable, it charged normally. You can use a 5W or 10W charger with any lighting cable or the USB of your computer, it will show "not charging" but it actually it is, at a very, very slow rate. My understanding is that Apple built this "not charging" into to the new update so that you must use MFi certified cables.

I actually have no dog in the fight, as I have no iPad - BUT your statement cannot be supported by the evidence

- if a person's iPad charged via USB/computer BEFORE iOS 10 update that means that the port does, in fact, have adequate power to charge the device

- what has CHANGED is the iOS "meter" and/or "power management routine" -

It is clear from the earlier report from a user's conversation with Apple Support specialist that "senior specialists" were becoming aware of the issue and that their response was that "it would be fixed in a future update"

What is NOT clear is whether charging is actually taking place and the "meter" software is merely reporting that it is not.

It charges but at a snails pace. I also spoke with Apple Support and they knew nothing about the problem and made an appointment to bring it in for someone to check it out. Here is a response from a reliable source that I use.

I upgraded my MBA yesterday to Sierra OS and now my iPad Mini 4 charges again!

I don't think this is coincidence. I had been charging my iPad Pro quite normally from my laptop's USB port ever since I got the iPad. This morning I updated to iOS 10.0.2 and it won't charge any longer. Given the number of similar reports I've just read, it's clear that this is an iOS 10 problem and not a coincidental cabling problem. I'm using the cable supplied with the iPad, so it's obviously an MFI cable.

The same cable from the laptop's USB port, disconnected from the iPad and moved to my iPhone (also just updated to iOS 10.0.2) charges the phone just fine.

The same cable from the iPad's charging port, disconnected from the laptop and moved over to a mains USB charger, charges the iPad just fine.

Ergo, this is a problem with the iPad running 10.0.2. And I certainly don't buy the idea of the new iOS having to "settle in" to an iPad before it charges normally from a laptop. The iOS and the iPad are near-massless electrons moving through near-rigid silicon, people, not a new house on a patch of earth.

Not being able to charge my iPad from my laptop is going to be a major PITA, especially when traveling.

I think that if you investigate further you will find that your iPad is charging, it is just not indicated. Coupled with all of these problems I am actually using a powered USB hub (Belkin USB 2) and that does not seem to charge the iPad either (but it does, just not indicated). There must be some internal measurement of threshold voltage in the iPad which is not activated by a (well regulated) USB port but OK with a mains USB charger.

Report your evidence that the "meter" is broken (you could probably leave out any 'theory' as to why you think it is - coders hate being told what is 'causing' their problem by a lay person)

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's too late – I upgraded to OS X Sierra, and the iPad now charges normally from the MacBook Pro's USB port!

Looks like the problem may be specific to the iPad, iOS 10, and OS X El Capitan (or some version/s of one or more of same).

I have posted the following text in another post with the same issue (iPad will not charge Via USB), hopefully it sheds some light on the problem/solution........

It's a software glitch! I have 2 iPad mini's and the latest iPod Touch all with ios10 installed. The iPod battery graphics work; and shows it being powered, but the two iPad mini's don't.

I run an i7, 16Gb ram PC, with 2, 3.0 USB connectors. The lightening cables for both iPads are what came with them when bought from apple and all work. Yes, it does charge the iPads by plugging them in to the USB adapter wall socket plug; and yep, it shows the charging graphics every time I do it this way, but plugging it into the PC USB sockets, erm, no graphic visuals!

Now, you might ask "Why say software issue?" Well, yesterday I left both iPads plugged in to the PC whilst updating my files, had the 'not connected' message, nor did I see the charging icon next to the battery. Anyhow, went to sleep, got up this morning and both pads are fully charged!! Not just that, they both have the power icon displaying next to the nice 100% green battery image!

It's also visible in iTunes as being 100% charged, so it does work when connected to a PC USB connector, unfortunately, you don't get any visual indication that it's charged until it reaches 100%; and then turns on the charging icon.

I had heard this before, but I didn't have the opportunity (or patience) to leave the iPad connected to the MacBook for a while to see whether the battery-charge percentage increased despite the "not charging" indication before I decided to upgrade the computer to Sierra. After I did that, all was back to normal.

That sequence of events does not support the idea that a software glitch in iOS is responsible, since the problem appears to have been resolved by upgrading the computer's OS. Not that I understand why doing something to the computer's OS would change the perceptions of the phone's OS...unless under Sierra the computer supplies a higher current through the USB port than under El Capitan.

Not so much... maybe

The "metering" is all software. The two OSes 'talk' to one another. It is quite possible that the iPads iOS was "expecting" certain "data-1" from the Mac - which is sent by OS X (El Cap) as "data-0" (get it? true and false, yes and no, exists and null?) == Sierra could be sending "data-1" as iOS 10 expects, thus the result you get. 😉
