Artist Photos Missing in iTunes 12.5.1
I've noticed a few artist photos are missing since upgrading to 12.5.1. Any ideas on how to fix or refresh? They are mainstream artists, nothing obscure.

I may have found a possible solution (well it worked for some of my missing artist photos in iTunes). I noticed that some of the artists with missing photos had an extra space after their name in iTunes.
So if you go into iTunes -
go to 'artists' under 'library' on the main page -
right click on an artist with a missing photo -
click 'artist info' -
look in the 'album artist' field -
see if there's an extra space at the end of their name -
if so, remove it and click 'ok'.
This has worked for me for most of the mainstream artists in my library, so has got rid of a fair number of those ugly microphone images.
Another point I've noticed is that changing the artist name slightly can determine whether iTunes will display a photo or not. For example 'The Bee Gees' in my library had a no photo even after removing the space. As this is a very mainstream artist, I thought to change the name album artist name to 'Bee Gees' and it worked bringing up an artist photo.
Good luck!
Not true. I have iPhone 7 plus. I admit the artist view on iPhone shows the ridiculous mic logo. I'm talking about iTunes in mac. I've not updated it and it's all good.
Thank you for the information. I had read people stating that they were asked to upgrade their iTunes version to the
most recent one to comply with their new iPhone requirements.
They ask but you don't have to do it.
iTunes 12.5.1 is the minimum version required to upgrade or restore iOS 10 or later. Earlier builds, at least back to iTunes 12.1.3 currently work for backup and syncing, but not for iPhone SE or 7, and may break at a future iOS update.

Yet another one in a series of moves to make iTunes a little worse than it was before. I should've stopped updating years ago.
Quite the way to put it. It DOES feel like an insult to music lovers..
Bring back either the cover comp or allow us to edit it with an image ourselves!!
I've noticed that, recently, the round artist icons have been reappearing. I used to have only one - but now there are nearly forty.
I'm still trying to figure out how it works. Apple edits the round icons on their end. If you rate a song or album, it's like sending them a request (of sorts).
I feel like there's gotta be a way to fix this by either adding certain metadata to the songs that iTunes wants to see to make it think the songs were purchased, or converting songs to a certain format, most likely .aac. I've messed around with both mp3tag and dbpoweramp but no luck yet. Will update if I find a solution.
This is a travesty from Apple in my opinion. All the hours I have spent making my photos match up and now they just throw it completely out of whack. I also saw where some users said the pictures only carry for itunes purchases, but i dont even see that happening. I just purchased In the Court of the Crimson King and there is no picture , only the stupid ugly microphone that looks like I ****** my set up of the album. Sad. hopefully fixed soon......I sent a direct request from itunes for whatever that is worth.

Again, this is simple:
Artists with a promotional photo on iTunes Store: We see an artist picture.
Artists without a promotional photo on iTunes Store: Microphone icon.
Same thing on Apple Music. A lot of pink microphones for a lot of artists.
Apple just need to put an album artwork for the artists who doesn't have a promotional photo (like before the update!). Or even better, letting us put a picture of our choice ourselves (if we want to), to represent each artist. What should be the basics!
Apple is not in any rush to solve this issue because it does not affect the functionality of iTunes. It's just the cosmetics. My friend's iTunes is showing all 50 artists out of 52 he purchased, I think because of the songs from iTune store.
Most of my music library has been purchased on iTunes Store (something like 90%) but I only have 147 artist images out of a total of 282 different artists.
And some artists from my personal audio CDs are displaying a picture...
I see quite a few have posted that artist pic only shows if purchased from ITunes store. Categorically NOT correct.
I have 500 albums, CD purchased and imported into iTunes. Most of the artists showing have pics but quite a few don't. These include mainstream artists like Stevie Nicks.
Not sure why this is, but more interested if anybody knows how to add a pic to replace the microphone icon?
There appears to be no way to do this. You can manually add album covers but not art for artists.
