Artist Photos Missing in iTunes 12.5.1
I've noticed a few artist photos are missing since upgrading to 12.5.1. Any ideas on how to fix or refresh? They are mainstream artists, nothing obscure.

I may have found a possible solution (well it worked for some of my missing artist photos in iTunes). I noticed that some of the artists with missing photos had an extra space after their name in iTunes.
So if you go into iTunes -
go to 'artists' under 'library' on the main page -
right click on an artist with a missing photo -
click 'artist info' -
look in the 'album artist' field -
see if there's an extra space at the end of their name -
if so, remove it and click 'ok'.
This has worked for me for most of the mainstream artists in my library, so has got rid of a fair number of those ugly microphone images.
Another point I've noticed is that changing the artist name slightly can determine whether iTunes will display a photo or not. For example 'The Bee Gees' in my library had a no photo even after removing the space. As this is a very mainstream artist, I thought to change the name album artist name to 'Bee Gees' and it worked bringing up an artist photo.
Good luck!
This just *****. I've spent ages getting my library perfectly tagged with album art and everything, and now it looks like crap with all the ugly microphone icons. What's wrong with displaying the album art there..
Funny how a company with millions of employees and technicians cannot get the most simple things to work. Besides that, it's also very irritating.
Adding to some others in this thread, I´d like to state that this is not correct. I have many, many albums purchased through the AppStore, however most of them do not show any artist picture at all, just the placebo microphone placeholder. Likewise, some of the shown artist images relate to albums I already had and ripped to my library. So it has nothing to do with them being purchased from the AppStore or not methinks.
A shame really, and a huge step back from what it was before this update.
I'm also very disappointed by the new artists view. Those microphone icons are hideous. 😢
On my Itunes 12.5.1.12 all my artist thumbnails are missing, all except for U2! Which happens to be the only artist Apple gave as a free download. All my other music I own on CD and have ripped to itunes. Strangely enough, on my Iphone using the new ios10, about half the artist thumbnails are present. These are not even images of album artwork but of portraits of the artists which I have never downloaded so must have been generated by Itunes. Previously, all the artists showed some sort of image in the thumbnails, I include a screenshot from my iphone and macbook. I'm no OCD perfectionist, however, I does now look scrappy and I don't think much of these latest updates so far.
Completely agree - seeing the same thing myself. I like to have the artwork for all of my albums in iTunes and hence synced to my devices. Removing this functionality is a backward step and is ludicrous - sort it out Apple!
same here, Apple just steadily approach to crossing my line, it's my ******* library..
I have the same problem too. I also noticed that some of the artists without pictures on my computer iTunes, have pictures on the music on my iPhone. It seems there are more artist pictures on my iPhone.
I can also confirm that on my iPhone, some of the same artists in my original screenshot do have portraits, but don't in iTunes. So whatever they are doing, it's not working correctly in iTunes.
And in either case, it's inconsistent and broken. For example, on my iPhone why do more obscure artists like Hot Chip or Sigur Ros have portraits, but The Ramones or Red Hot Chilli Peppers do not?
We should be able to either A) Customize the artist portrait, or B) Toggle back to album covers for the artist portraits.
*** Apple? Like seriously, ***? How are you going to destroy the aesthetic of the Music app AND our iTunes library by doing this? It's a complete lack of care to all the music lovers out there, and frankly, with a move like this, makes me want to leave this ecosystem.
It's the principle of the matter.
I agree with Ian. This whole thing looks like a hot mess. First of all, the album cover art on my Mac is now 3 ½" square now. It takes up WAY too much real estate. There needs to be a way to adjust the size of the cover art.
The artist thumbnail problem is another mess. Some artist faces show up on my iPhone but not on my Mac. What up that!?
For several years now, I've wished they would stick the "All Artists" button at the top of the artist list. Would eliminate a lot of scrolling up and down.
Its inconsistent between the iPhone on iOS 10 and the new iTunes.
It just doesn't make any sense.
Could not agree more! Looks and functions horribly, especially when which artist pics are displayed appears to be random, so as I scan down the column there is no logic to which artists have pictures and which have the uber-ugly pink & purple microphone logo. And BTW, 99% of my library was purchased from Apple.
Apple--fix this inconsistent ugliness ASAP, please.
This explains why Artist View is having problems with missing photos. The article isn't current, but the info is still valuable:
