Q: Hello: New to Community
Hello: I am new to the Community. I know more about PC (as I worked for many years on Windows work-stations, but have been working on Mac's only. I can't help with a lot, but Audio is my better area of skill, as I am a long-time drummer and Songwriter with ASCAP. Switched to Mac and have more questions than answers. During my time in life earning my Grad & Post-Grad degrees, I had ONE class - ONE - that had anything to do with computing and that was with SIMPLE binary understanding of 1's & 0's. Today, I noticed that one is an 'outlier' if they do NOT have automatic ability to use iphones, watches, GPS, wireless devices, and basically any device that didn't come out yesterday. Sometimes, people do have some issues with audio or run into a musical-sound related pothole. Maybe, if someone has an EQ or mix problem, I might be able to help with that, or with Writing - good structure and composing good sentences. I have questions, mostly about set-up, networking and how to learn effective short-cut techniques.
I am leaning on this Community to help me become 'better' with my MacLife, or my 'McLife'. I have relatives who are true Guru-types in areas of various Specialty with all things Mac, PC and even Linux. They are Pros, and much like Music, my definition of Pro means "they get PAID for their work". One of my relatives is in Admin-Security, one is a Published Designer, and one who's work is valued at a well-known online dating site. All the others (younger adults) in the Fam? Computer-IT is in their DNA. My skills are deeply rooted in Music, Drumming, and Writing (as in commentary, review, and article pieces-opines). If I want to navigate my Macbook Pro, iMac + all the gizmo-periphery (Gizmo= the keyword for 'one who knows just enough to ask a question and pronounce the device terminology correctly'), I can go it alone, but seriously, I always feel like I have to make a phone call -- which is why my calls are seldom answered. LOL, which I understand completely. I do have outside sources that will help, by request, and they will come to my location and help me with networking or config problems - for a price, which I don't mind paying. Everything works better and if you are going to spend $$ for gear? Paying to have it tweaked is similar to having an expensive sports car - maintaining it can be costly, but these are necessary costs. I mean, what good is an expensive car IF it doesn't run great, or you don't use the tech-tools that come with the car?
So, joining this Community was suggested to me for two reasons, I suspect:
1. to learn about my gear and how to apply it, and the possible REAL reason, 2. For my relative's sanity. @_@
I can help with Audio and some DAW questions, but I will be needing help, mostly, for questions that cover all things Mac. Worked from 1996 - 2015 with all Windows-PC work-stations. Then, for my 105th birthday, I received a Macbook Pro. Switching to Mac has been much like learning another language. But, spending one hour per day HERE, and at the Support page, has helped and there are some VERY smart people in this Community and in Apple Support. I can, and DO, appreciate your skills (all of those here). So, thank you for any help and I will try and do something to pay it forward.
My mind comes from a non-mathematical background - but from a related background in Music-Drumming, as both have structure (design, notation to follow), but with music, it's options are more an 'open-ended' creativity, not "pick from a list of options" and both, I believe, use the same areas of the brain that work with structured design-options. Again, both provide a benefit - one from working more inside the box, and the other more outside the box, AWAY from a 'logical vs. illogical' right or wrong technique . However, the ability to USE this information, unfortunately, does not help much in knowing how to set up a Network or how to config preferences, as these are set to work exactly as designed, albeit with optional preferences one normally finds in Mac machines. No, it is more HOW these work and understanding what the options do. Then, how they work together, knowing what each process is supposed to do, and THIS is what helps you select which one functions best with what you are trying to do. Thanks for listening and thanks to the Mods. My questions will be shorter than my intro. Have a good one,
