Before iOS10, it was enough only to touch the home button in order to unlock and open the device, now I have to press it. This isn't an enhancement at all.

Where to turn on? Up to now I didn't find how to turn on that feature; it's available with iPhone6?
Raise to wake is not available on the 6, the 6s and later has a different accelerometer that allows this.
Ah ja! So raise it or let it on the desk top -no matter-, push the home button once to wake it up and put the finger tip to scan the finger print!
But it always makes no difference wether "home button" - "to open put finger on" is activated or not?!
No difference to the situation before.
I don't know, the Raise to Wake is working for me on the 6S, I have no idea if it's the same on iPhone 6.

The "Rest Finger to Open" does make a difference, but it is subtle. Key to understanding this is imagining your iPhone in a state where it is locked but the screen is on, either from "lift to wake" or by pressing the sleep/wake button. In this state, the screen is on -- so to unlock it you just have to rest your finger on the Home button if this setting is ON. If the setting is turned OFF, then you have to actually click the Home button for your finger to be read. That is the difference.
Ditto for me. I put into effect "rest finger to open" and nothing changed. I then turned it off and turned it on again. No change. This is not a serious problem but it should work.
Re the earlier debate about your home button, I have an old iPad with a defective home button. By utilizing "assistive touch" I have not needed it at all.
It seems that rockmyplimsoul is right.
But this feature is really subtile. And w/o special information a standard user won't find out the difference.
