Watch OS 3 Draining Battery Very Quickly

Since updating to Watch OS 3 last night, my Watch's battery life depletes ridiculously fast. Every 20 mins, I witness a battery drain of at least 4-5% without usage. It is even worse when I am using the workout app. I have turned off background app refresh and the problem still stays. I've also tried rebooting the phone & watch as well as unpaired and restored from backup. Still nothing.

We'll see: The oddity of my watch problem is that the very significant battery drain did not happen until I switched from Apple Watch Series 0 (so to say) to Apple Watch Series 1, each running OS 3. While my first Apple Watch (OS 3) would finish a day with 50% battery or more, after 12 to 16 hours at the hospital, the Series 1 ends at about 15%, with exactly the same setup on the watch.

Update on Apple Watch battery issue...sent AW in to get looked at and Apple completely replaced it. I've set it up again, but then realized that the watch is on OS 2.2.2. I think I am going to leave it as-is for now until they get the battery issue resolved on OS 3. There is nothing that compelling that I NEED OS 3 for! PLUS, I can track my battery life to make sure the all-day battery life pre-OS 3 wasn't a figment of my imagination.

One more data point: I stopped using the workout app, and my battery life returned to pre-watchOS3 levels. I decided to test it again today. A 30 minute outdoor walk burned 10% of the battery: from 94% pre workout to 84% post workout. Pretty clear then that it is the workout app doing this.

This prohibits the use of AW as a fitness tracker. No one wants a 5 hour limit. Given this function is a premier feature of the AW, it is still surprising to me that Apple has not yet issued a fix for this bug.

I have forced quit the workout app. I'm sort of curious to see if the battery drain continues. If so, I'll try a restart. That seems to have stopped it in the past.

I sent in for repair, got a replacement device sent. Seems to be better but I also notice the extreme batter drain with the workout app and the Nike+ running app. I did a 30 minute workout on Friday at it drained around 10% and a 45 minute run yesterday and it drained 12%. The heart rate is on the whole time so maybe it is that. Yesterday I made it the whole day and was at about 40% at the end of the day which is much better than the previous. Just my current observations.

Update on my AW, I stayed on 2.2.2 and was getting 16-18 hours easily with my usual apps, etc. Interestingly enough, I was having problems with the GPS on my iPhone 7 so brought it into Apple...after doing the usual troubleshooting, they discovered that my bluetooth wasn't working correctly which would be indicative of a hinkey logic board (and would explain both the AW battery drain and the GPS issue). They replaced the phone, I decided to upgrade to 3.1 on my AW and yesterday (my first day on 3.1) I was at 60% after 20 hours! Much better!

I still have this problem - it's pretty similar to lots others here.

I've got an Apple Watch Series 0, 42mm. It worked fine with great battery life up until some point after OS3. After that update it started draining quickly, sometimes losing 10-12% an hour, and never making it to the end of the day.

The Workout app makes it worse, and on days when I get normal battery life (which is rare, but sometimes happens when both my phone and watch have been turned off and charged a few times) it's the use of the Workout app that seems to restart the behaviour.

I'm in contact with Apple Support, who have now replaced my Watch once, but it hasn't fixed the problem. This replacement suggests to me that even if I got a new watch, I'd still be getting this issue.

It'd be nice if there was some sort of fix on the horizon, but at this stage, I'm not really holding out a great deal of hope.
