Problem adding video to iTunes 12.5.1.21

I recently upgraded iTunes to 12.5.1.21. Now, when adding mp4 files, iTunes is not placing them in the home videos section as before but rather adding them to music and the option to change the Media Kind to Movies or TV Shows does not appear in the options tab of Get Info, it only allows changing to other audio file types. This is happening with multiple files. Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

I have a few videos I made using my Iphone 5s. I wanted to play them on my Ipad 2, about 3 years old.

Many of the replies here gave me hope but the details were a bit difficult to follow.

1. Place your videos on an easy to find folder. I placed three in a folder on the desktop. example IMG_0731

2. Start Itunes.

3. In the top left corner press the "Movies" box, Your purchased movies will appear on the screen alphabetically as usual. Note that I have the "Home video" category as my last item in the "Library" listing. Because I have already installed other home movies. See below.

4. Click on "File" and then "Add to Library" {Command+O}

This will bring up a window which will allow you to select the M4V files on your computer.

Here is what mine looked like.

5. Select all with {Command+A} or click on the first in the list then {Shift+click} on the last item.

6. After selecting them, click on the {Open} button in the bottom right of the box.

This creates the "Home Video" category you see above after item 3.

if you click on "Home Videos" you will see thumbnails in the window.

7. Plug in your Ipad and wait until it connects.

8. On the computer, click on the Ipad icon. Select the 4th item down, "Movies" to see your list of available movies.

Your home movies will now be mixed into that list.

9. See image IMG_0731 is among the other purchased movies.

10. select the home movies you want to upload to your ipad. And click on "Apply"

11. The movies will transfer onto the Ipad. A new category {"Home Movies"} will appear on the Ipad when you select the video button.

12. And just to make you wonder if you did something wrong, a warning window appears on your Ipad telling you "1 item could not be synced. See Itunes for more information" OK

13. This is your Ipad's way of saying it misses Steve Jobs. Just ignore the warning. It does not seem to effect anything.

...........Now you should be able to play home videos.

But it does not always work. Sigh.

All of my personal Iphone 5 movies easily loaded onto my Ipad but other m4v movies will not even upload into the computer in itunes. Including Apple tutorials and a purchased music video extra from Itunes.

I hope this helps. It was a challenge but worth it.

I have the same problem too. As soon as I have upgraded to the latest iTunes (12.5.1.21), it started to misplace movies in m4v or mp4 extensions importing them in music without possibility of changing the files in Movies or TV Shows through the option tab. It doesn't happen for every m4v or mp4 I try to import, but it happens quite often.

For reference my machine is an iMac retina 5k, 27 inch, late 2015, 4 Ghz Intel Core i7.

I have succeeded in adding the mp4 and m4v files to the correct location in iTunes and they work as normal.

I previously used HandBrake but for some unknown reasons some of the Handbrake conversions into m4v or mp4 no longer seem to be compatible with the latest iTunes, so I tried to convert those files using HandBrakeBatch and worked just fine.

This is not a solution but a way to avoid the problem. I hope it can be helpful.

So here is what I did for iTunes 12.5.3.17 (on my MBP Mid-2012 with a clean install of macOS Sierra 10.12.1 and 8 GB RAM)...I used this to import all my ripped DVDs.

  • Use the Media selection drop-down box at the top of the iTunes and choose Movies
  • Choose File -> Add to Library
  • Browse to the location of your file and import it
  • After you import your first video a new entry of Home Videos will appear under the Sidebar's Library section

If you can not see the Sidebar, then select View->Show sidebar

  • You can also sync your iPhone and choose any of these movies to view, the movies will appear in its Movie app

Hope this helps...

Thanks my friend !

Indeed a movie with a DTS audio track will not work in iTunes. Removing the track or converting it with ffmpeg does the trick. It could also be done directly in Handbrake once you are aware of the iTunes limitation.

To convert audio tracks from DTS to AC3 use :

ffmpeg -i MyMovie.mp4 -map 0 -vcodec copy -scodec copy -c:a:1 ac3 -b:a:1 640k AC3_Movie.mp4

(Not too sure about the necessity for -vcodec and -scodec but "-c:a:1 ac3 -b:a:1 640k" means convert 2nd audio track to AC3 at max possible bit rate)

What do you mean by " iTunes no longer supports DTS" ? It was supported at some point and Apple decided that we (the customers) don't need it anymore ?

I don't personally know much (if anything) about these formats. Is DTS and old technology and AC3 is now considered better ?

Thanks
