iOS 10 keyboard sound volume

Hi,

I have a problem with my iPhone SE running iOS 10.0.1. New keyboard clicking sound is barely hearable in comparision with previous sound in iOS 9.

I have all my volume settings set to maximum, everything else is loud, but keyboard clicks are still too silent.

Thank you.

I have this same problem on my new iPhone 7 Plus. I can assure you the volume is a fraction of what it used to be. Originally, I thought this was an issue with the new phone rather than the latest OS as the only other place I have seen this was from another iPhone 7 user. However, if you are getting this on an SE, seems to point more towards iOS 10.0.1.

Here is a link to the other thread (Iphone 7 Keyboard Volume). I've outlined in detail troubleshooting steps I have already taken. I should note that I tried all of the beta builds and the first full release on my iPhone 6S Plus prior to iOS 10 being released to the public. For every build, including the final public release, the keyboard clicks were much louder. I first noticed this issue when I received my iPhone 7 Plus, hence thinking the phone was the issue. It seems more likely now the issue was introduced with iOS 10.0.1 as my old 6S was not updated to that version.

I Will try to update the OS tonight and see if that hoses the volume of the keyboard on my old phone.

On September 27th I started a support ticket with Apple concerning this and sent them a video side by side comparison of my iPhone 6S Plus and my iPhone 7 Plus showing the discrepancy in the keyboard volume. One week in and the video recording I submitted has not even been looked at (emailed via file share system that generates download receipts - has not been downloaded). Posting it here for you guys to see. Alongside a healthy disclaimer that this was shot on the fly and is by no means professionally done.

I Have the same issue on my iPad. Updated to iOS 10.0.2 this morning. keyboard clicks and lock screen sound are barely audible, practically silent. Text & email ringtones are very loud as I've turned sound to max. I found a video online of the new keyboard clicks & it shows a keyboard with much MUCH louder clicks. Have tried a reset & that didn't help. If anyone has a work around I'd love to hear it.

I have been experiencing this problem since installing iOS 10 i.e. old keyboard sound was previously audible, but new sound was very soft despite ‘increasing the volume’ (I’ll explain the inverted commas in a moment).

In my case, the issue was resolved by changing settings as follows:

1. Go to Settings > Sounds

2. (While you are here, double-check that ‘Keyboard Clicks’ is enabled down the bottom)

3. Under the ‘Ringer and Alerts’ slider at the top, enable ‘Change with Buttons’

Note that with ‘Change with Buttons’ enabled, the tip underneath says ‘The volume of the ringer and alerts can be adjusted using the volume buttons’, whereas when disabled, it would say ‘The volume of the ringer and alerts will not be affected by the volume buttons’.

This means that, when the setting is enabled, the volume buttons can be used to adjust two types of volumes (instead of just one) – one being ‘Sound Effects’ i.e. system sounds like the keyboard and lock sounds, and the other being ‘Volume’ e.g. music or podcasts.

The type of volume the buttons control at any time appears to be context-specific, and appears on the overlay when using the buttons. Taking the Music app as an example, using the volume buttons when nothing is playing will adjust ‘Sound Effects’, and using them when music is playing will adjust ‘Volume’ (of music).

In short, once you have changed the setting as outlined above, you should be able to increase the volume of the keyboard by simply pressing the home button and using the volume buttons (assuming there is no other sound or music playing at the same time). You could also use the volume buttons in the Settings screen, but it’s less clear, as this adjusts the ‘Ringer and Alerts’ slider rather than having the ‘Sound Effects’ volume overlay on screen.

Hope this helps.

@jcmtam, while I appreciate the response, and I hope this helps others who are not familiar with the way Apple has designed their volume slider, this does not resolve the ultimate issue that my new phone is significantly quieter than my last one - in terms of keyboard clicks and lock sounds. To be 100% clear, yes, adjusting the volume with the volume keys adjusts different things and you CAN make the volume of the keyboard clicks even quieter (which baffles me as they are already almost inaudible). But that being said, even with the keyboard volume up to max, the volume is nowhere near as loud as my old iPhone 6S Plus. I think the YouTube video I posted even shows me adjusting the volume as I am typing on the new phone and at max volume it is nowhere near as loud.
