iOS 10 battery drain / overheating

I Updated my iPhone 6 64gb to iOS 10 yesterday, today with normal low usage my battery (charged every night) has dropped from 100% to 38% in just over 1 hour I've also noticed that in use it is getting very hot something it never did under iOS 9, so apart from the positive of now having a winter pocket hand warmer it will be a useless phone after mid day I hope iOS 10.0.2 comes out quickly to address this issue, a very disappointed Mac user since Mac OS 8.5

Thanks for the suggestion. Will definitely try it.

Also I think the problem is with a soft reset that most people do. My friend had the same issue. Then came the iOS 10.0.2 update. He did the update. Battery was good. But he had some issue with the Whatsapp notifications. So he did a Soft Reset & then the battery went bad, major drainage. The battery is slightly better now after a full charge. If anyone has these (App related) issues then just RESTART the phone. Don't do a soft reset.

It's been 3 weeks now since I installed iOS 10. Battery seems to have improved after about 10 days but I'm still not getting the same backup like in iOS 9.3.5. I'm going to try the Network Reset now. Will update the battery status in a day or two.

Finally there is still a heating problem with iOS 10. It has not been resolved even with iOS 10.0.2. Looks like the iOS 10 was not designed for the 6 & 6s phones 😟.

Hi DerFlink,

If you might have lots of apps installed, I hope you have also checked, that the automatic update of the apps is not on, since now it uses 3g (4g), if WiFi is not on or available. This feature ruined my battery after IOS 9 -> 10. Turning the automatic update off (plus also the unnecessary widgets) helped at least me. Having a two-year-old 5s.

I thought 10.0.2 would fix the problem but no luck. I have my iPhone in low power consumption mode (as well as disabled every possible feature like location services) so now my battery only drains in 1% increments instead of 2% increments every time I text. My phone now lasts about four hours instead of twenty minutes. I carry my charger around with me everywhere keeping my eyes open for a power outlet and close every app after using it to extend battery life.

Sure hope Apple offers a solution soon or I will need to downgrade to iOS9 (if its possible) or look at changing my phone.

yeah, I updated to 10.0.2 yesterday, noticed it a little hot at the time, not so much since then bit I had charged it that day, wnet to bed woke up this morning and it was dead, charged it again and have been noticing all day that the battery goes down far quicker then normal even though it's been just sitting there checked the battery usage and the home & lock screen is using 94% and it doesn't even go to the lock screen most of the time like it use to

I don't want to be the good guy, nor the Apple blind disciple here. We have to count with several variables and think also for ourselves, there is tons of variables which cause this problem, starting with iOS 10 was developed for iPhone 7 family. Every other model is and will be always an adaptation. Apple invested for selling up that day only iPhones 7. All the other models we have to think ourselves how can we manage to use a new OS in an old machine! I am my self-learning it “everyday” since the times I had my iPhone 5s and did the update for iOS 9.

List of good behavior to keep the battery alive for about 26h ±2h, things that I still remember well:

  • Date & Time – Set Automatic - turn it off, if you are traveling, you have enough time in the airplane to re-set manually it for the new location
  • Background App Refresh – turn off, for all apps, the system are speedy enough and when we open the desire App you get all the updates you need, and the Push fucktion is still on and working well
  • Notifications are off for most apps, just left on for Messages, FaceTime, Whatsapp, Email … all other as games and some other developers are off, you never know how the private developers are doing with that function on the App, and can be that they are permanently working and respectively draining the life of the battery. Just leave on the ones that are really communications related.
  • Facebook and Messages, delete, REMOVE permanently from your iPhone, they drain stupidity your battery. Even when they are off, they are communication with Facebook servers. It was a significante improvment for the battery life.
  • Privacy – Location Services – 50% of my Apps are off, and the ones I choose to be on, I set as “While Using”. Here is a good workout to do, just use the apps that you realy need the location services, for example why someone needs the App Store always on!
  • Privacy – Location Services – last option when scroll down, System Services, in my case I just turn off, Diagnostics & Usage and Improve Maps, all the others are on.
  • Display & Brightness – Auto-Brightness – is turned off, less sensors eating your resourses
  • Display & Brightness – Raise to Wake – is turned off, less sensors eating your resourses
  • Diagnostics & Usage – Don’t Send – off, if Apple needs the information they should pay for it, that’s my policy, and meanwhile I am saving the Battery I paid for.
  • Weather App, for all the ones installed in your iPhone, keep only the cities you need, all the other are eating resources.
  • Stock App, the same as the Weather App, delete the stocks you don’t need, if you don’t have stocks that you need to monitor then just delete all the ones listed.

I cannot tell how many Apps I have installed, but for sure over 100, the most import thing to do is to have sure that you can control them yourself, understand how much they drain your resources, so that you can respond in your favor. Here you have a very good help in the SETTINGS – BATTERY, see how is the behavior of worst Apps. Here you can see also, when scroll down, Standby and Usage times. My “good” reference number is about 24 hours standby for 3.5 hours usage. That can guide you to manage all the settings and which Apps are getting your battery drained.

Just to keep all updated:

I had all the symptoms described in this blog when I did the iOS 10.0.1 update and they are gone after Resetting the Network setting and updated to iOS 10.1 Public Beta

@miguel_forum. Thank you for the comprehensive advise. I have a 5s and was working perfectly before the update to iOS10. Now with all apps off and 100% battery before bed, and I am late so many times in the morning cause my battery died sometime during the night. I tried the reset network option but it did not work. This is my work phone so not going to try the Beta version. We need apple to come to the party and offer a solution Before loosing a lot of faithful clients.

I had this happen with my iPHONE 7. I did everything mentioned and still had the problem. Phone was 10 days old. Made an appointment at the genius bar and it was replaced in 10 minutes. The two people I spoke with at Apple were unaware of the issue. I showed the employee at the genius bar this thread. If you have done everything, make an appointment at Apple.
