maps voice navigation sound issue ios10

Greetings -

Not sure if I am putting this in the right area but I am seeing an issue with the audio for voice directions on Maps not working correctly on my car sound system after upgrading to ios 10.

I use my phone connected to my car with a lighting to USB cable not Bluetooth. The car correctly plays audio from iTunes under ios 10 and does give voice directions if I have the AUX input (iPhone) chosen on my car audio system. Under ios 9 though I could be listening to the radio and voice directions from Maps would override the radio audio to tell me about upcoming turns, etc. Under ios 10, if I am listening to the audio from my iPhone and on the AUX input then the directions play across the car audio fine. If I on the other hand switch to another input like the standard radio then the voice directions are muted. I can switch inputs on the car audio system and see this occur each time.

I drive a 2011 Chevy Equinox without Handoff, as mentioned above use a lightning to usb cable to connect to the car audio, and currently am using an iPhone 6. I have not used ios 10 enough to confirm all other audio works fine through the car audio system but Siri, Music, etc. seem to all work fine through the cable connection to the AUX input just the voice directions are an issue so far.

I am not a software engineer but it appears that under ios 9 the voice directions had some priority when being sent to the car audio to play over the other inputs beyond the AUX input but under ios 10 that "priority" is not there and so voice directions will only play over music being sent from the iPhone on the AUX input.

Any tricks, hints, ideas, on something to try? Should this be reported somewhere else so Apple can consider adding it to a bug list to deal with?

Thanks -

I have a chevy Silverado and I'm having the same problem w my iPhone 7. Regardless if the phone is paired via Bluetooth or not, when plugged in via USB, all sounds originating from the phone ( navigation, music, notifications) are muted and are not coming through the car speakers. If the phone is paired with blue tooth alone and I'm not charging it via USB, there is no problem but I drive for Uber and need to have the phone charging while using the navigation. Has anyone figured out a solution?

Yes but this doesnt happen when charging the phone in a wall outlet (which still utilizes the lightning input). I did how ever find an alternative. My chevy has multiple ways you can charge the phone. It has USB inputs, it has a wall outlet (like the ones in your home) and it also has the cigarette lighter. The problem is only happening when I charge the phone with the USB port in the car. If charge the phone using the cigarette lighter or the wall outlet, the phones output doesnt mute. Im assuming this happend only because the USB ports are somehow like to the sound system in the vehicle and the is some sort of incompatibility. So if you use the other two methods ( cig. lighter/wall charger) the phone doesnt link with te sound system at all. It only charges the phone and the phone doesnt mute either. You can then link via bluetooth if you want the audio to come through the car speakers....Hope this helps =)

I tried this solution and it did work, however, what is annoying is that you have to set it up to work. Before I found this solution I'd given up to some degree and downloaded Google maps which just worked without any setups! The only silly thing I discovered is when you're lost and want to become "unlost" it tells you to go north-west or whatever forgetting that if your lost you have no idea (unless you have a compass) which way that is! I hope the built in app had more intelligence

My issue is similar to this one. Frequently (not always) no audio will come out for voice prompts in navigation (Apple Maps, Google Maps, or Waze) unless I have Podcasts or Google Music playing. Then sometimes the audio prompts get chopped. "turn ri" instead of "turn right". If I connect via USB cable, these problems don't seem to happen.

I'm really frustrated by this poor BT perform

Juanm987,

Thanks for the tip, it worked for me, with a slight addition.

I have a 2015 Chevy Silverado HD2500 LT with the std 8" info center, paired to both an iPhone 6S and an iPad.

I was having, what seems to me, similar problems as others, no music when connected via the USB outlet. As soon as I followed Juan's (and others?) idea to use the 110 outlet to charge the device rather than the trucks USB outlet, I had no problems. The iPhone 6S and iPad are linked thru the "mychevy" app via bluetooth. However, while I did have music, I still didn't have voice navigation using Google maps, that was solved by following yet other members advice by going into the map settings (on both the iPhone and iPad) and setting voice output to bluetooth. I now have streaming music from my iphone (while charging) with GPS voice navigation when desired. My iPad can now also provide voice navigation over the trucks stereo system.

Thanks to all for the tips!

Not sure if this will help, but I had a similar problem with my new iPhone 7 and my BMW. The solution was remarkably simple, but you have to be sitting in the car with the engine running (stay parked of course) and the phone connected - I connect via Bluetooth, but in theory it should be the same if you connect via USB.

1) Connect the phone to the started car

2) find directions to a location and press "Go" to start the navigation process

3) at the bottom of the iPhone screen, just tap the section in the middle - an option screen should appear

4) select the voice volume you want

5) select how you want the voice to output - to car or iphone

6) select pause spoken audio (to switch off the radio, etc) when the navigation speaks

7) there is another option that depends on whether or not your car allows for an override - play with this

Hope this helps - it worked for me.

Same problem with my new iPhone 7. The suggestion to change the config after starting the navigation seems to work, but it's not really plausible to have everyone pull over and start the navigation because it's not hands free. The Map app can find the nearest gas station, but I have to pull off the interstate to switch the output for the Map's "turn-by-turn" voice directions. Just plain stupid.

If you have the USB plugged in (while driving) you get nothing. If you unplug the USB, then Map directions can be heard through the phone. This is clearly an oversight on the part of Apple.

I now find that once I have changed the settings, if I start a route on my iPhone 7, the sound automatically comes through the car speakers without me doing anything else. The radio mutes, and the iPhone nav directions come through the radio via BlueTooth. (if you have the USB cable connected the sound will not go through the speakers and the iPhone is muted)

So, this is NOT AN APPLE THING. The iPhone 7 will work perfectly via Bluetooth. It will depend on your car settings.

This is a problem that first emerged for me in iOS 9. I used the solution described above and it did work. However it emerged again when I upgraded to iOS 10. This IS an apple/iPhone issue. This feature should not break for every iOS upgrade, as it's rather inconvenient when it's discovered while driving. As for the guy charging the phone via USB, that's not the only means available to charge it, but I get the point. Perhaps more options should be given in settings to choose how one's bluetooth connection should be configured. On this apple is woefully negligent.
