Tiny font using mail in iOS 10

Hi GHPS, I tried "resetting all settings." Unfortunately, that did not work for me. To be specific, when I use Apple's native mail app, some of my emails are rendering in very small font...too small to read comfortably. The problem exists for my Outlook emails as well as for Gmail although it is more pronounced with Outlook. "Resetting all Settings" does require some work to get your phone back to total running condition. It was worth the experiment for me, but others may want to wait for confirmation on its effectiveness from others before biting the bullet and trying this.

I am back to using "Spark" by Readdle for all my emails. Despite continuing to experiment with other email apps, it still renders all my emails in the largest font. It also does not add so much additional functionality as to make using the app cumbersome.

Just ordered the Google Phone. The fact that Apple can consistently have this much noise about a basic piece of essential functionality doesn't work for me. I've got a job to do.

An update to my recommendation to try Readdle's Spark for iOS...

Readdle has now released a Spark companion app for Mac OS. This gives Spark cross-platform compatibility and makes it an even nicer option for those frustrated with Apple's native email app. I'll post the link to Spark for Mac OS below. Hope the moderators don't delete it. 😁

Having said this, please know that whereas Spark displays emails in a font consistently larger than other iOS email apps (Outlook, Gmail, Easilydo, etc.) even Spark could offer a larger font size. Users over 40, with tired eyes, would weep with joy. I contacted Readdle about adding the ability to select various font sizes (small, medium, large, extra large) in its settings and they said they are currently working on adding this functionality. They added that instead of controlling font size within the app itself they are also considering having Spark support Apple's "Dynamic Type" functionality. Either option would be a very nice addition to an already nice email app.

Agree with you. The solution was shortlived.

I have an open case Iphone support and they have now recommended restore drive again from backup. But I'm skeptical take this suggestion as it would cost me 4-5 hours and risk losing data if itunes restore does not work.

I wouldn't buy that backup and restore solution. I can't believe this many iPhones have been corrupted by some evil demon and requrire a flush and refill to fix. I bet the problem is more widespread and many folks are silently dealing with the issue. I believe there is a software problem on Apple's part.

Why do I think this? Well, as I've mentioned above, the email client Spark renders all my emails (Outlook, Gmail, iCloud, Exchange) just fine. No micro font. No text running off the screen. No problems at all.

There is no way I would invest hours of MY time in a backup and restore knowing it will probably make no difference. Unless, of course, the Apple Support person told me they, and several other support person colleagues, had the exact same problem on their personal devices and the backup and restore fixed things permenently. Then I would bite the bullet.

I did the reset all settings and it seems to have worked. The email font size is now a bit larger in the native iPhone email app.

The settings reset has now caused other problems with the fingerprint function not working and my wifi ability seems to be dead. Other problems.

I agree. In my multiple tests, this week I sent one of the problematic emails to my friends email to check in his new IPhone 7, and what do you know?, exactly same tiny font problem. We both are running the latest ios version 10.1.1, I am in iPhone 6, 64gb and he has a 7 with 128gb.

I am holding my purchase of "the 7" until this is solved, the Huawei phone with dual camera seems quite nice as an interim phone for a year or so until Tim decides to actually use his iPhone and faces this problem and politely asks if it could be possible to fix this before IPhone 10...

I thought some would like to know that Microsoft just released (Dec. 7) an update for Outlook for iOS. One feature of the update is the global use of a larger font size. I compared several "tiny font emails" in the native iOS mail client with the same email as displayed in the updated Outlook client. The Outlook email rendered with significantly larger text and was much more readable.

Sadly, it didn't work for me - at least on some emails. Others are fine. But the ones that are tiny are from people who's emails were never tiny in the past on iOS 9.

Also, mail from companies or websites that use formatting are now quite small, too. Would love the Safari function to force an email to conform to the iPhone font size to also be available in Mail - you know, the little 4 line icon thing in the web address bit at the top.

Reader functionality (that 4 line thing on the web address block) would be a nice feature for emails too. Having said that, it must be a horrendous coding challenge to do what it seems everyone in this discussion would like. Otherwise, I have to believe Apple would have done it already in its native iOS email client. Right?

What is that? Well...Folks send emails out in all different "flavors," which includes the sender's choice of font size and font style. I use 14 point Verdana as it is very readable. But I have some friends who use, say, 11 point Calibri. Clearly these friends have bionic vision and I celebrate their ability to read such tiny text. But, in no way do I want to read their emails in 11 point Calibri! So, what do I want? I want my email client to render any sent email in MY preferred font style and size. I want that friend's microscopic text to display on my iPhone in 14 point Verdana. For all the computer scientists out there, what is the reason why Apple's email client does NOT do this...for all emails??

Going out on a limb here, but this could possibly solve the unreadably small text problem in the native mail app.

Theoretically, Apple's native mail client should respond to Dynamic Type functionality. Dynamic Type is a way to globally have your iPhone render text at a user-determined size. It works on most native apps, such as the Apple's Mail app. Some 3rd party developers also employ Dynamic Type.

I have discovered a quirk (bug) in Dynamic Type that may explain why it is not doing its job in all cases. But first, how do you turn on Dynamic Type on your iPhone so you can avail yourself of its ability to enlarge the font in your emails?

1. Go to Settings --> General --> Accessibility --> Larger Text
2. Turn on Larger Accessibility Sizes for bigger font options
3. Drag the slider to select the font size you want. This should theoretically work across the entire set of slider positions...BUT IT DOESN'T!

Here is the problem. If you drag the slider to adjust the size of Dynamic Type it will have NO EFFECT unless you set it to the location shown below, or further to the right. At least, that's the story on my iPhone 6s+. If I move the slider one "notch" further to the left than shown, the size of the font JUMPS down to those excruciating tiny sizes.

So, you may be able to once again enjoy large, readable text in the native mail app by employing Dynamic Type as instructed above and moving the slider to the position in my screen shot below.

BTW, if you want to make your text even MORE READABLE:

Go to Settings > General > Accessibility to make the text bold, increase the contrast, or invert the colors on your screen.
