Recommended database app

This question has been asked and answered a number of times but nothing new. I'm running El Capitan and I'm looking for a low cost or free app that can create simple databases. My book library is getting too large for a spreadsheet and I have other genealogy stuff that I would like to catalog in a database. Any recommendations for a simple low cost database app?

I'm afraid databases tend not to come cheaply, except for LibreOffice and similar - though I found the database module there very clunky and difficult to use. However as it's free you might feel it was worth looking at. For serious use the only real choice is Filemaker Pro, but it's very expensive.

I wrote a page on databases (specifically from the point of view of replacing Appleworks but the remarks are just as relevant) - it's some months since I last checked the links so some of the prices may have changed.
