Homekit automation not triggering

I am really loving the new Homekit app in iOS 10. I think it is much better than the Philips Hue app I have been using to control my lights at home. However there does seem to be something wrong with the automation feature. Or else I am just missing something, in which case, I would be appreciate any help I can get.

My setup is as follows:

  • 4th gen Apple TV acting as a homekit hup
  • 1 Philips Hue bridge
  • 4 Philips Hue white bulbs
  • 1 Philips Hue Lightstrip
  • 1 iPhone and 1 iPad Mini using Homekit app to set scenes

I have several scenes set up and using the automation feature, I use the following schedule

  • Good morning - All 4 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 05:30
  • Lights off - All lights of at 08:45
  • Afternoon - All 4 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 14:30
  • Evening - 3 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 19:00
  • Good morning - All lights except lightstrip off at 22:30

The problem is that the timers don't always trigger. As far as I can tell, the lights off afternoon, evening and Good night automations work fine. But the morning automation never seems to trigger automatically. When I try to debug in the morning and play with the times and wait and see, it will sometimes trigger, sometimes not. Then I wait again for the next morning and it doesn't trigger. I even put a Light off in at 05:00, half an hour before good morning, to see if that helped, but it didn't.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to why the morning automation doesn't want to activate?

Unfortunately, the solution worked just once... 😟

Do you activative Background App Refresh ?

What is the time between you leave home and your Leave Home scene is activate ? Because it takes almost 30 minutes for me.

After, the scene "Leave Home" is always activated until I return home. So that is logical.

But when I arrived to home, the scene "Arrived Home" doesn't stay activate. Why ???

Once I had an homekit icon on my lock screen but it stayed just 2 minutes... I think location has no stability... I bought Apple because normaly it works fine and easily but I'm really disapointed by them...

And I know my gps works and geofence too, because I use IFTTT and it detects geofence.

I'll try to remove all access of all applications on my Hue bridge on "my.meethue.com"

I hope Apple will be reactive and they will not wait for iOS 11 to share a correction.

(sorry for my poor english)

Gold morning Will. I just activated my wife's backrounf app refresh. Hopefully that works. My scenes activate as soon as I come into and leave my geofence for my wife it is never as it doesn't recognize her location in the HomeKit.

apple doesn't get back to me. I believe it's because they know there is an issue. Has anyone gotten this to work for a second user?

I am not sure if I am having the same problem but I have found that changes that I make to Homekit automation do not seem to update on my AppleTV (4th generation) until I restart the AppleTV. I am not sure if that is by design but I have never seen the need to restart in any documentation.

I will say that when I tried to enable my AppleTV as a home hub, I had to try a lot of different suggestions from other users to get the HomeKit setting to show up under iCloud settings. It seemed like turning location services off and on fixed that issue... That certainly didn't seem normal so it could be that something about my AppleTV is not updating properly to begin with.

I realize everyone in this thread seems to be using the Hue Hub/Hue app and having issues with Automations triggering reliably. Just wanted to add that I have a new Lutron Caseta Hub/Lutron app and am also having trouble with Automations. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. It is very frustrating, to say the least.

I am intrigued by the idea that the 3rd party app may be conflicting-I will try to remove my Lutron app and see if that changes anything.

Also, if there are any Apple Community reps reading-you really need a HomeKit Support area-trying to find help for this app is ridiculous-it is spread between the Apple Developers forum, the iPhone forum, the iPad forum, the AppleTV forum, and the HomeSharing forum. Tim Cook just rhapsodized in the latest financial call about how great HomeKit is-obviously he has never looked here to try to get help.

I use the Lutron app for the automation as it is me and my wife using it, and it works very well compared to homekit which only works for me and doesn't work at all for my wife as it doesn't sense her location or play into the geofence and automation.

I hope this helps.. I set it up under arriving/leaving home - and let the phone decide if we are home or not.. it works perfect.. you will never come home to a dark home again, or leave the house with lights turned on.. the sad part is that the homekit doesn't allow multiple users to use the homekit and track their location and trigger automation events.

the only automations that I have through homekit for the lutron switches are every night at midnight and 3am to do a sweep and turn off any lights that may be on.

I don't have any location based triggers through homekit as at the moment it only works with my phone and not my wifes where the lutron app will work with both.

yes the hub does allow for remote automation parallel to what the apple tv would do through homekit.

I'm using the Lutron Caseta Hub and switches. Although it took a while to get everything stable and reliable, automation is working for me.

First I needed to completely reset my Apple TV 4, which was a pain, reinstalling all the apps, and entering passwords along with two-factor authentication. I also set the Apple TV to never sleep.

All my Caseta devices were added using the Lutron app. Then I used Apple Home app to create rooms and assign the devices to those rooms. I also used the Home app to give the devices consistent names.

The Lutron app picked up these changes and everything matched between the two apps.

Now I used Home to setup automations and they are working reliably.

My timer automations are working reliably, but my "When an accessory is controlled..." automations are hit and miss. I'm using a current Hue bridge, Lutron Casita hub and some iHome switches. When they don't trigger I've noticed that they will begin triggering if I reset my Apple TV (pull the plug for a second), but after some time they may stop again. Also, I've noticed that they are likely not to work after I've been watching my Apple TV, so it's probably not a sleep issue. This could easily be a coincidence, though.

It's frustrating because I need HomeKit to tie my systems together. For example, I'm using a Hue sensor (which is not HomeKit certified directly) to turn on a Hue light, which then triggers an iHome switch to turn on some other lights via HomeKit. The only reason I even have the Hue light in the process is to have HomeKit trigger the iHome switch. This particular automation works about 80% of the time.

Another example is turning off a Hue light when I turn off a Casita lamp via a wall switch. This works about 50% of the time, and when it doesn't I have to pull the phone out of my pocket to turn off the other light.

BTW, when one of these automations is working, it will work over and over again. When it's not working, it will never work.

The connectivity to the Apple TV is wired, and I believe, reliable. I'm not sure what to do next.

I know these are old but frankly I never had automation issues until recently and now they are daily. My entire home is converted over to "SmartHome" being a Network Architect and IoT Engineer. With the heavy traffic of all Smart Home devices along will all home devices such as Apple TV's, TV's, Laptops, iPads, iPhones, etc. all on a single Wi-Fi network SSID I decided to break them off after seeing a repeating pattern with lower powered devices such as iDevices Switches. Now with a new network VLAN segment just for SmartHome devices, all devices moved onto their own dedicated SSID in that VLAN only, all TV's laptops, and devices minus my iPad Pro that controls the Home Apps the response has been immediate and perfect each and every time for over a month now, never with a miss. Further I have 3 Aerohive AP's running 2.4GHz and Smart-Home SSID dedicated, while laptops and TV's on dedicated Cisco AP's at 5GHz. Now that all responds, the automation stopped working, sporatic at best but never reliable and it didn't start until I chose "Sunset" for some automation scenes for the first time. The sunset failed to work after about 3 days, then all of them for weeks now every there after. Cleaned out DB, rebuilt, same. Used respective device apps to build each scene and schedule and its better, more responsive but far from perfect I had going for nearly 2 years prior to Apple Home app and IOS 10 hitting the scene....

Hi Arthur,

I have have the same problem as you. The triggers seems to respond inconsistently. The worst one is the one relative to the sun who's by the way append when it's already to dark. Apple should add the possibility to set a certain time before the sunset. My Apple tv is always on and I also used an ipad as a concentrator. Did you find any solution since you post your question ?

I have a very similar setup and the triggers work fine. What I have noticed is the Philips hue lights frequently are in a state of "not responding". if that occurs when an automation's trigger time occurs too, then clearly it will seem like the automation didn't trigger

I'm working on why my lights are not responding - the best theory I have is wifi interference on the Philips hub. I recently changed the Zigbee channel from 15 to 25 and noticed an improvement.

I never solved my problem. The triggers work sometimes and sometimes they do not. Interesting comment from bereillyte though. I may look into the Zigbee channels and how they compare to my wifi channels.

In the meantime, I have gone back to using the Hue app to set timers on the hue bridge. They work every time without fail. I used the Home app to control individual lights.
