Homekit automation not triggering

I am really loving the new Homekit app in iOS 10. I think it is much better than the Philips Hue app I have been using to control my lights at home. However there does seem to be something wrong with the automation feature. Or else I am just missing something, in which case, I would be appreciate any help I can get.

My setup is as follows:

  • 4th gen Apple TV acting as a homekit hup
  • 1 Philips Hue bridge
  • 4 Philips Hue white bulbs
  • 1 Philips Hue Lightstrip
  • 1 iPhone and 1 iPad Mini using Homekit app to set scenes

I have several scenes set up and using the automation feature, I use the following schedule

  • Good morning - All 4 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 05:30
  • Lights off - All lights of at 08:45
  • Afternoon - All 4 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 14:30
  • Evening - 3 white bulbs and lightstrip on at 19:00
  • Good morning - All lights except lightstrip off at 22:30

The problem is that the timers don't always trigger. As far as I can tell, the lights off afternoon, evening and Good night automations work fine. But the morning automation never seems to trigger automatically. When I try to debug in the morning and play with the times and wait and see, it will sometimes trigger, sometimes not. Then I wait again for the next morning and it doesn't trigger. I even put a Light off in at 05:00, half an hour before good morning, to see if that helped, but it didn't.

Does anyone have any suggestion as to why the morning automation doesn't want to activate?

I had the same issue and was so frustrated that I was just about to give up on HomeKit and Home automations altogether. However, I finally found the source of the issue, at least in my setup. I had configured an AppleTV AND an iPad as Home Hubs. My automations were completely sporadic and failed more often than not. When I disabled the iPad as a Home Hub, all of my automations started working flawlessly. I haven't had a single failure in almost two weeks. Perhaps both devices were trying to send a signal and cancelled each other out? In any case, this solved my automation issue and I'm extremely happy with Home now.

I fixed mine and found 2 issues.

The setup:

Few hue bulbs, hue hub 2.0, apple tv 4

The issue:

Home automation working intermittently and not behaving as expected.

The solution that worker for me:

1) The DNS I am using on the apple TV is causing a lot of delays. Removed it.

2) Once I create the Automation rule in the Home app it works. If I try to change the rule, it will look like it did, but it will not work. The only way that it can reflect the changes is when I restart the Hue hub and start from scratch.

Of course, you need to make sure that the apple tv is actually working as a hub. A restart there before starting would do you good.

These are my 2 cents. Good luck!!

I have a similar issues and have been talking with Apple about it. I have an Apple TV 4th Gen, Hue lights (20+), 9 Eve sockets and a motion detector. The Automations are very hit and miss, the Geo fencing, Dawn and dusk Automation do seem to work fine, but Automations based on triggers such as a device switching on or the motion detector are very unreliable, also the interface to my Netatmo Thermostat is also hit and miss, sometimes not working other time Siri setting the wrong temperature.

I have been talking to Apple for some time but don't seem to be going anywhere, I'm going to log a new call tomorrow so will post here how I get on. But after a lot of testing and resetting it does seem they have issues with the Automationa

I've been having a problem that is different but I believe it's related to the same issue. Prior to iOS 10 I had my triggers working flawlessly. When I was 1/4 mile from home it would trigger my "arrive home" automation (this was ran through iDevices) and my front door would unlock precisely as I walked up to it.

No, since I'm forced to use the Home app, I get notifications asking me if I want the Home app to run the automation instead of just doing it. It's really ******* me off.

I was on the phone with Apple "tech support" for 56 minutes and most of that time was me trying to explain to them what a geofence is and that my 3rd party accessories work perfectly, their just not being told to do anything.

This is why I hate apples closed system that is so restrictive. I don't want to use their stupid Home app because it screws everything up. Sure I can delete it and use my old app but when I do that I STILL get the.l notification asking me if I want Home to run my automation, even though I've deleted the app.

It's maddening and I really wish they would swallow their pride and allo users to use apps that they don't make. So what if that's admitting THEIR app isn't the end all/be all. Wouldn't happy users be the better choice?

Please fix it!

I too have sporadic triggers on Apple TV. I use triggers because the only physical light switch I can find is Hue Tap, and it doesn't send its state to HomeKit, so several Elgato Eves are set to trigger in response to a Hue bulb. Tedious, but it should work. Totally random whether it does or not, but morning is the worse - as though the Apple TV has gone to sleep. Best solution for me would be to find a physical switch that would send its status to HomeKit, so bypassing triggers entirely.

Mine is having a similar problem. I am VERY basic right now with my Homekit...only have 1 iHome wifi plug that controls a lamp by our front hallway. I have the automation set to turn on at sunset, and off at sunrise. It seems to work about 3-5 days a week. Other days I have to manually turn it on using the Home app, which doesn't have an issue connection to it when I do it. It'll then turn off in the morning just fine. I've only noticed it not turning on in the evening. I haven't seen any issues with it turning off in the morning at all. It is frustrating!

I have an old Honeywell smart switch for my outside lights that has been working flawlessly for years and it is also programmed for sunset to sunrise, auto adjusting based on my location. Only downside is I have no remote access, but geez if Apple can't even make this simple task work, what's the point of all this automation? I really want to jump in full-on with this and bought this wifi switch as a "test" and so far, test is failing. C'mon, Apple!
