Probably a hardware problem. "All" is not lost; you can try to repair it... If it's the hard drive, those parts are no longer produced. You can consider replacing it with commonly available flash-based storage, in the form of compact flash card or SDXC card (on an adapter). This web site relevant information, for 5th gen and later "classic" iPods

My older iPods (3rd gen and 4th gen) have been "upgraded" with compact flash card and SDXC card (both 64GB), on different adapters. I replaced battery too. They work better now, with much higher storage capacity, than when they were new.

In your case (because it gets stuck at Apple logo), the fault may be something else, such as a problem on logic board. If you end up opening the casing, you should actually disconnect the battery connector (wait a few minutes) and reconnect. Completely remove power from logic board; letting battery drain may not be sufficient.

and there are numerous YouTube videos demonstrating opening of iPod classic.

That may mean iPod has a hardware problem, such as a faulty hard drive or logic board.

When you do a Reset (press and hold down the Menu and Center buttons), does iPod's screen go blank initially before the Apple logo returns? Or are you saying that the Apple logo is "stuck" and it does not go away when you try to Reset?

Is "DFU mode" the procedure for Disk Mode. Take a look here to confirm this is what you tried

There's not much else you can try, if iPod does not get passed Apple logo. The problem is often a faulty hard drive, but you normally get to an error screen instead of being stuck at Apple logo. So your iPod's problem may be something else.

Actually, one thing you can try is to disconnect iPod's battery (for a few minutes) and then reconnect it. This requires opening the iPod, which is tricky (if you've never done it before) for your iPod type. Instead, if that Apple logo remains on iPod's screen, let it run out of power. If screen stays ON, it should run out of power eventually. When it powers OFF, make it come back ON, until it no longer comes back ON when you press buttons. iPod is completely "dead." Let it sit that way for a few hours more, or overnight. Then, connect it to a power source and see if there's any difference.
