iPhone 6S shutting off at 30% battery

iPhone 6S, iOS 9.3.4/5 (problem on both).

A couple weeks ago my phone started shutting itself off at around 30-40% battery life. Then the charge screen shows if I immediately try to turn it on again. If I wait 15 minutes and turn it on it says it still has ~30% battery remaining and it will normally stay on all the way down to 1-2% battery.

I ran it all the way down, let it sit for a couple hours, then charged it all the way to 100% while the phone was off. The problem still persists.

I also did a clean restore (set up as new phone).

Ok, I was finally in contact with a Senior Advisor and from their diagnostic they told me that my device passed all the checks with Green Light, which means they would not be allowed to open it to see if something is wrong as the hardware seems to be working perfectly fine.

Now, I performed a System Restore with their assistance and have configured the phone as a new one.

Following their instructions I have not copied the backup.

I am instead downloading the apps once more and inputting the datas inside.

According to the S.Advisor what happened is that I made the system update via a wi-fi connection which was not perfectly stable and this corrupted the downloaded file enough to make the energy readers in the battery trigger a shut-down at around 30%. She advised me to always update the phone via iTunes to avoid almost all useless complications.

Concerning performance, I noticed that choosing a Live Wallpaper for both Lock Screen and Home screen induces an awful lot of lag.

I will keep you up to date during tomorrow to see if the problem is solved.

Only thing: Messages and Health data is lost after update, maybe they were not included in the iCloud datas?

Anyway now I have direct contact with the S.Advisor and she will follow me directly from now on.

Thanks you all, I will copy this same message in the other post I was keeping, hoping this will help somebody having the same problem.

I have done all that. It didn't take care of the problem. The best I've come is getting the phone to run down to as close to 0% as possible. Which took quite a few tries.

The Apple Store said they'd swap my phone. But they're normally giving you a refurb... and what stops you from being right in the same position again?

I will say that my phone lasts at least 2 days if not more. If I don't turn the phone off ever it actually seems better. Shutting it down under 50% seems to worsen the condition.

I didn't know they could give you a refurbished model when they replace your phone.

I think there has been a Class Action against this in the US as in the warranty document it is written that they have to give you a replacement as good as new and the refurbished should not qualify against that.

Anyway, after the Restore my device is working properly, battery consumption between 100 and 20% is a bit fast for my taste (6hrs, of heavy usage - video, photo, docs and maps navigation) but the performance between 20 and 0 was really excellent. So maybe I have some settings that should be turned off to improve battery life while in normal power consumption mode.

Maybe background refresh, but I wonder if this simply involves apps that are open or it also shuts off the notifications for closed apps.

Maybe automatic downloads could be turned off, or at least the "Use cellular data".

Any other ideas?

Lastly: when I restore from iTunes backup, does it restore the whole phone with all the apps or only the iOS with the datas? For example, I have an app called BudJet which saves datas in iCloud but the app itself doesn't let me import datas from anywhere ... Would a restore solve the issue?

More info:

It seems like apps are pulling too much power forcing the phone to crash/shut off. I use Camera+. Settings: .tif, save to camera roll and lightbox. If I take say 4 pictures within four seconds the phone shuts off as if the battery as died. If I try to turn it back on immediately the dead battery/plug in the phone image is displayed. Wait a few minutes and the phone boots up normally again. This has happened repeatedly under 50% battery.

Other occurrences I can remember all happened when using apps that require a good amount of battery.

I don't think the crash logs show battery issues either.

depends on which country you are, and what is the status of the warranty of your iPhone.

In EU we have 2 years warranty. I had the same the similar issues, just turn off between 45% and 30% and after power in again, continues charging at the level left off ... no other issues as fast draining or overheating

I went last week Saturday to Genius Bar with my 6s and I was there just 4min, and came out with a new one in hand. No questions at all asked. and the one I got is out of the factory one, not a refurnished one, it was manufactured on end of Sep.2016.

the one thing I notice, the original 6s I had, had a Samsung processor, and the new one as a TMSC processor. also for the statistics, my wife has the same 6s model bought on the same day as mine, just have a different colour, and she has a TMSC processor. during the upgrade iOS9 -> iOS10 she never had any issue with the battery, no overheating, no draining fast and also no unwanted shutting down.
