Ah, interesting. Several years ago I had to get a new cord for my Bose to get full control. The local Bose store knew about the problem and had an updated cord. It wasn't free, however (nothing with Bose ever is).
I updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 10.0.2 and the mic on my Bose earphones now works. Yeah!
BTW, before upgrading my iOS version, the mic on my Apple supplied earphones always worked and the mic on my Bose earphones never worked. It appears others have had different experiences, but mine was consistent.
I had the same issue. After upgrading to 10.0.2 the problem was resolved. The mic on my Bose earphones works fine.
I asked Bose. Their response was that it was a software issue from apple. I've copied their response below.
Hello John,
Thank you for reaching out to us regarding your concern. I'd be more than happy to assist.
If you haven't done so please try it on another phone and check if you get the same issue. If you only get the issue on your iPhone 7, it's possible that the issue is with the Lightning adapter.
Some customers have been reporting to Bose that when using this adapter their headphone controls work intermittently – some reporting that their headphone controls stopped working after 30 minutes use. However, this issue also appears to be affecting customers using Apple’s own Lightning Ear Pods (in-ear headphones) that are included in the box with their iPhone 7.
I suggest that you contact Apple as this is not an issue with the Bose headphones (but rather with the iPhone software).
Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.
Update-
I did some trouble shooting after realizing my iPad mini had the headphone jack. The Bose works perfectly through the jack but when using the adapter through the lightning connector I still get a popping noise. So that seems to indicate to me that the adapter is the problem.
I returned my iPhone 7 for an iPhone 6S and now the Bose headphones don't work in the headphones jack either. Maybe it's my Bose...
It would be VERY helpful if you identified the Bose headphone model.
I'm not about to compare your picture with the various Bose earbuds that they sell now and have sold in the past to figure out what model it is. I don't suppose you would be willing to tell me?

Thanks for looking! Not sure what the issue is.
Interesting. You'll notice that I searched on the Bose site and couldn't locate anything.
Mine look exactly like the picture. They are QC 20 noise reducing earbuds. They will not work with my iPhone 7 plus.
I just tested "SoundSport" and there are no issues. Per the above, the "SoundTrue" are older models and aren't compatible. The "Ulta" is similar to the "Sport," but better sound quality.
Yes, several Bose earbuds look like that.
Now, your problem... What do you mean by "will not work?" Are you saying that you hear no sounds?
