PPTP VPN does not work over Iphone Personal Hotspot

Hi,

I just updated to iOS 10 yesterday and now all my devices that I use to connect to the personal hotspot on my iphone are not able to establish PPTP VPN connections. I was aware of the PPTP client being disabled in iOS, but did they actually block PPTP from being used by devices that connect to the Personal Hotspot?

Please help ASAP, I know there are many more end users like myself having the same issue.

iPhone 6, iOS 10

HI Jonathon,

Your response, like others that I have noticed in these discussion pages, is missing the very precise point that is being asked. Like myself, most users here are very aware that ios10 does not support VPN profiles with PPTP, and that ios10 is unable to establish connections to this type of VPN sever - and we are (mostly) ok with it. But that is not the question here. We are talking about using the ios10 device as a personal hotspot. I do this all the time. I am onsite with a client, not allowed to connect my laptop to their corporate network, so I use my iPhone's personal hotspot instead - but it is the laptop that is actually VPNing not the iPhone, which is just a hotspot. In this case the iPhone does not have any VPN profile - it's just a hotspot. I have always assumed that a VPN 'tunnels' through its carrier networks - so the hotspot should not care about the VPN protocol from the laptop (??) So... can the removal of PPTP have this effect on the Personal hotspot? Or is there a bigger problem where ios10 will not allow 'any' VPNing over the personal hotspot?

Hi

Apple does not recommend using the PPTP protocol for secure, private communication.

iOS 10 and macOS Sierra intentionally remove PPTP connections from any VPN profile when a user upgrades their device.

Apple recommends using an alternative VPN protocol that is more secure:

Anobody in the industry got the memo...? No small business routers available to this day...

Using SHIMO on Macbook to connect to my office vpn, but no connection with iPad

What does the God Apple recommend for us small business people who don't have an IT department willing to spend millions upgrading our system... And several campuses in the same pickle as I have read.

I have to agree, no one came remotely close to the point of the op's question.

I can confirm that iOS 10.0.2 (14A456) does not support client machines (Mac or Win) connecting to the host device's (iPhone 6) mobile hotspot and establishing a PPTP tunnel.

All in all, it makes sense that removing the support of the PPTP protocol would disallow this type of activity.

The phone cant route or pass that protocol in any form. While I respect Apple's decision, it still puts folks in a hard spot. Maybe less so for personal users, but for small to mid sized businesses that did take the fast and easy route, we are broken until we can implement a work around.

It would be nice if future updates supported a vpn pass-through feature, so the device could at least bridge the gap. The protocol will not make the host device insecure in any fashion, its just the unsecure tunnel.
