CarPlay problems after iOS 10 Update

Ever since iOS 10 my CarPlay functions have been very glitchy, mostly when I got navigation going on at the same time. Here's a few things I encounter:

  • Music freezes (can't change songs, can't tap into the app if I tap out of it, icon zooms in once it gets past freezing)
  • Siri mutes herself when reading texts (only seems to happen when I listen to a text straight from a notification
  • CarPlay itself randomly disconnects for a couple seconds at a time (although it MAY be my wire but it has yet to show any tears)

Also some other pet peeves from BEFORE iOS 10 that are still happening now with Music:

Some radio station genres found in Apple Music on iPhone/iPad/Mac are not listed in CarPlay

Anyone else w/ CarPlay suffering from these problems?

iPhone 6s, iOS 10

Did Honda say anything regarding the problem?

My CarPlay hasn't been working for awhile now and I've tried everything mentioned earlier.

It works when I start my car and plug it in, but it would disconnect shortly after & will not connect anymore.

I've tried restoring my phone & using a different cord.

=/

I have gone the restore and different cord route as well. Both didn't make any difference for me either - although restoring my iPhone 6+ did provide some insight into the overall problem I am having.

With Apple Music disabled, which it is when you restore an iPhone, CarPlay worked great. As soon as I enabled my 37000+ track Apple Music library, CarPlay started having problems again and when I disabled it (again) CarPlay went back to working great again. And to add to this, my wife's iPhone works great in my car but she has a significantly smaller Apple Music library than I do (guessing around 1000-2000 songs).

Certainly a poor workaround, especially for those of us who want to listen to music. But if music is a secondary concern to you OR you don't have a large (not sure how large is defined but it must be somewhere between 2000 and 37000) music library, then disabling Apple Music might allow you to use some of the **other** CarPlay features without having any issues.

My iCloud Music Library is not large. I visited Honda who performed a software update and CarPlay worked as before. I am waiting to reconnect with Apple Support as we had tried everything with them, pending my update with Honda. I'm glad it is working of course but hope this kind of thing isn't a repeat in future.

Curious what model of Civic you have and what firmware they updated you to.

As far as I know I have the latest myself unless there is a secret, you need to ask three times for it, update I don't know about. The firmware I am on (ends in .69) is what came with my 2016 Civic Touring back in July.

our newest weirdness is that the car does not show up under settings/general/CarPlay It worked fine until today and just stopped working. We have tried different cables, restarting phones (problem exists with two separate 6's with current OS that worked before), restarting car (2017 Camaro).

The wheel just spins under the CarPlay menu. When you plug the phone in, CarPlay shows up briefly on the phone like it is trying to do something but gives up and just starts the music function. Very frustrating since nothing has changed since last used. Anyone? Anyone???

I now have the same issues with my 2012 VW TDI wagon plus the car's Bluetooth hand free phone system freezes. I can no longer use hands free Bluetooth in my car since the iOS 10.2.1 update.

Very annoying and dangerous!

Dies anyone have any suggestions since my car is not equipped with Apple CarPlay?

Apple should have thought of non CarPlay users b4 their update....

I have a 2017 Honda Civic and I'm having this same issue. I've tried different cables, no change in behavior. Unlike others, I don't use iCloud Music Library since I keep all my music directly on my devices so it's not enabled. My music library is in the 6,000 range so it's not nearly as large as what some others have but it's also not tiny.

My phone is seemingly randomly disconnected - it an happen as many as two times in an hour, or it might not happen at all. Unplugging and plugging it in *usually* fixes it for the rest of my drive but occasionally it doesn't. I've tried different cables, positioning my phone differently in case a vibration is causing the physical connection to drop and none of this has solved it.

I did notice that in the music display under the tach/speedometer that instead of displaying the album art it was a generic icon. Based on something else I read last night I deleted the CarPlay config for my car on my phone. Now *all* of the album art is suddenly displaying perfectly fine - I thought the problem was solved. During that 20 minute drive CarPlay once again dropped the connection ("No device connected") about 17 minutes in. On the return trip, no problems at all.

Disconnections happen at any time: Just connected and not being used. Connected and listening to music. Connected listening to music and using Apple Maps for navigation. Connected and in the middle of a conversation with someone on the phone.

This happens to me as well using Bluetooth and CarPlay. Can't determine a reason or pattern for it - sometimes it works and sometimes it does not.

And like you found out, I haven't seen any (lasting) improvement for deleting profiles / setups. If it does anything is is usually short lived.

I have actually became part of the Apple beta program for iOS so I could download 10.3 early to see if it fixes this ridiculous problem. It's been driving me insane too. They say there are Carplay items in 10.3 but don't provide details on what they are. I will post again if I find out it appears to fix it. I just downloaded it last night so I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Since my last post, CarPlay has been surprisingly stable and working as it should. The only thing I did was delete the pairing between my phone and car (settings->CarPlay) and the next time I was in my car I set it up. It worked great.

I then noticed a few days later that it had apparently removed the Bluetooth pairing between my phone and car - so after deleting the pairing entry in my car I added that. While I thought I had possibly found the issue (having the phone paired both with CarPlay and Bluetooth), that has been stable too - no issues even when bouncing between music, maps and calls.

Hopefully it remains this stable as I really like the feature and capabilities, but only time will tell.

So far that works for me if I connect the phone via USB before I reinstall the bluetooth again. I had did it initially and reconnected everything at the same time and then it happened right away again. But if I remove it all and then connect via USB and activate the CarPlay stuff without any Bluetooth involved it seems to work. I hope it sticks as well because that was seriously the worst.

Just FYI, I tried that variation too but you had better luck as it didn't make any difference. Once I deleted the "profile" under settings/general/CarPlay, the phone will not even recognize the car again. The little wheel just spins and the car never shows up again.

It just shows how flakey this system is if one thing works for one person and not another!! As you said, it's the worst!

Over the last few days it again seemed that more and more album art wasn't being randomly displayed on the area below the speedometer like normal - but CarPlay was stable.

Last night I upgraded my phone to 10.3, drove to work without issue. Driving to another location the music dropped out (phone still indicated CarPlay was connected), came back, then the car again indicated "no device connected". Unplugged/replugged the phone in and it was fine. About 3 minutes into my drive home - it happened again. So I did the following:

1. Settings -> General -> CarPlay and deleted the profile for my car.

2. Unplugged my phone. Did a hard reboot of the phone (iPhone 7 Plus -> held volume down button + power button until it rebooted).

3. While that was going on, I rebooted the head unit in my Civic (touched/held my finger on the audio power button until it prompted me if I wanted it to reboot (yes)).

Once everything was rebooted, plugged my phone back in and re associated it with the car.....(all of the above done safely of course).

Time will once again tell how stable this is. I'm not quite due for my first maintenance on the car - but when I do take it in I will be asking if there is any software update available for the car.

I find that if I turn my iPhone 6+ off and back on again that CarPlay usually works better until it gets "dirty" again at which point I get the "No Device Connected" message as well.

I too have done the repairing / reassociating numerous times and have seen little to no difference in doing so. It isn't clear how this would make a difference anyway but enough other people have suggested it and it is easy enough to try that it was worth doing. But in the end, every combination of resetting that I have tried has not resulted in a permanent solution.

The major cause, for me at least, is the size of my Apple Music library. If I disable Apple Music, then CarPlay works significantly better and I cannot recall ever having a "crash." Related, if I plug my wife's iPhone in, who has a much smaller Apple Music library than I do, CarPlay works great also. It is only when I have Apple Music enabled on my iPhone 6+ is when things do not work well / at all and I am constantly getting the "No Device Connected" message while using CarPlay (although as you have seen the music keeps playing you just cannot control it.)

I took my 2016 Civic in last weekend for it's first service and there were no updates available for the radio headunit.

Mar 29, 2017 1:48 PM in response to JJG070890

I fully agree it's something getting "dirty" - either in the head unit or our phones. Without being able to see any logged information this is going to be extremely difficult for us to trace down as to which side of the fence (head unit or phone) the issue is on.

I do *not* have Apple Music - my entire library (~6,500 songs) is on my phone. In fact, iCloud Music Library is even turned off on my phone. I've only been using one of my playlists that has ~1,000 songs in it.

Assuming it's one side or the other reaching a dirty state - my phone was rebooted yesterday (<24 hours ago) during the upgrade to 10.3. So theoretically it should not have been in a dirty state. The head unit in the car though - I hadn't restarted that in a while. Running an errand a few minutes ago there was one song that didn't display the album art - i looked and there *is* album art for that song on my phone....

I had something interesting happen yesterday.

On my way home, my headunit freaked out and started blinking / flashing. After 1-2 minutes it rebooted itself. After that, CarPlay worked flawlessly - and this is without doing anything with my iPhone. Then I shut my engine off and with it the radio and several minutes after that came back and CarPlay was back to having issues again - displaying "No Device Connected" about 2-3 minutes after firing it up.

While I wasn't trying to use CarPlay, I had accidently switched from SiriusXM to "iPod" and was surprised that my iPhone showed up. I have not invested too much time it trying to get that to work but prior to yesterday, it had never worked and yet somehow yesterday it actually displayed some songs. It didn't work very well and may have ultimately led to my headunit freaking out but interesting nonetheless.

Just when I think I am beginning to get a handle on things, something like yesterday happens to throw in a little curve ball. But it is pretty evident that it is some type of memory thing since there are some known (and mostly unknown) situations where it will work.
