CarPlay Maps not going into night mode

Since the update to iOS 10, my phone has not been going into night mode when I am using Maps in CarPlay. My car is a Hyundai and the stock radio is compatible with CarPlay. Prior to the upgrade, I have not had an issue. Is there any new setting that I am unaware of or a known problem with this upgrade?

Thanks!

I had this same problem. Tried everything I could think of. In the end it was the dimmer for my dash lights. It was set on max brightness. Turned it down one notch and everything suddenly worked. Night mode has worked ever since 🙂. I have a '18 Subaru Crosstrek and this solved my problem. Hopefully it will work for you, too.

*** WORKAROUND ***

Begin navigation --> Use Hyundai app to rerun to Default screen --> Go to Settings --> Display --> Turn off "Automatic" and select "Night Mode" --> Return to CarPlay nav

This setting only seems to keep for one use so you will need to repeatedly play with the display settings each drive. I believe I sometimes have to toggle out of night mode and back just to get it to work again.

This is by no means a solution but at least gets it working, sort of. I believe it's a head unit issue but I'm not sure.

I "fixed" the problem in my wife's 2016 Sonata. She had never toyed with the display settings on the head unit. Changed the 'night' illumination setting from the default to '0'. (which is still darned bright in my opinion) Once I turned it all the way down and made sure the setting for the unit was on automatic, it works as expected. Apparently the head unit makes the determination not based on whether the headlights are on (as my Kenwood does), but based on the amount of ambient light detected by the sensor on the dash.

I have a 2017 Elantra too and the same problem occurred after the last IOS update. However, I found a work around.

Make this adjustment on your car touch screen display. Go to display, mode, uncheck automatic and check night mode. Problem fixed. Maps go into dark mode at night even if you want to just have map displayed without navigation running.

Hope that helps.

I had a similar issue with my Suzuki. But it seems to be not an issue of iPhone, Maps app nor iOS version, but of the head unit because it works fine with another same model. Night mode of Maps app seems to be linked with the signal of the headlamps. I asked a dealer to check signal wire and replace the head unit to new one.

I suppose some cars which are being discussed here don't send any headlamp signal to the head unit and that's why it does not work.

Actuallyyyyyyy I was having this issue too until I realized it's an issue with the factory settings in my car's display not the iOS. I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra and it was a quick fix. I went to the display setting in the menu and it was set to automatic. So I selected night mode, turned the brightness all the way down because for some reason it comes set at full brightness, and then switched the display back to automatic. And I haven't had an issue with the maps since. So yeah, just turn down the night brightness and all is well. No harm no foul.

I've had this same issue with my iPhone 6S Plus and CarPlay after updating to iOS 10! The Apple Maps no longer automatically switch to Night Mode while using navigation after sunset! The screen in my car is now so blindingly bright that I can't use Apple Maps safely for navigation at night. I have a 2017 Hyundai Elantra that has the tech package upgrade that included a stock touchscreen radio that supports Apple CarPlay. It worked perfectly fine before I updated my iPhone to iOS 10!

Note that we are not talking about the new feature Night Shift, that is working perfectly fine. We are talking about Night Mode in Apple Maps that should change the interface to dark blue and black automatically at sunset while using navigation. It works on the iPhone itself still, but not through Apple CarPlay after the iOS 10 update!

This needs to be fixed soon, please push an update for this Apple!

I have an update to my CarPlay issues with Night Mode in Maps. I updated to ios10.1.1 a couple of days ago. Although I read the list of "fixes" with this update, and saw no mention of this Night mode issue, I decided to check it in my Accord. I thought maybe it was fixed and just not listed. It was definitely NOT fixed. But I did find something interesting. When I had Maps running in CarPlay, it never switched on Night Mode, no matter what. That was on the car display and also on my iPhone 6. However, as soon as I unplugged my phone from the car, the Maps app immediately switched to Night Mode on my phone.

So come on, Apple!! Fix this already!!!
