My Late 2014 MacBook pro 13 inch has been overheating since installing Sierra. At 10 minutes it is warmer than normal, at 20 minutes it is too hot to have on your lap. Opening and running a partition with el capitan does not cause overheating after an hour. Does anyone else have this problem? SMC Fan Control says it is running at 137 degrees fahrenheit.

Many thanks for this tip - solved the self same problem at a stroke on my MBP Early 2011 having upgraded to Sierra. 16GB ram + 2 x 1TB HDs (i in place of OD tray) and still running sweet.

Thank you so much for that post. You probably saved me from a burnt processor. secd was high, Keychain was not checked, and re-enabling it cooled off the laptop within seconds. Nice call!

Macs switch off before they burn up.
That is the theory but not always the FACT.
If it doesn't then its broken and needs repair by Apple.
UNTRURE - if it actually GOT THAT HOT to turn oFF, you're NOT IN THE SAFE ZONE period.

I was having the same problem. I turned on Keychain and within about 1 minute my fan started throttling down and the bottom of my MacBook Pro started to cool off.
The secd process was running amok on both my mbp and iMac, after upgrading to SierraOS. I found an almost identical solution, except keeping the keychain turned on is not necessary. It can be simply turned off again afterwards. I suspect turning it on creates a configuration file, which then satisfies the Security Daemon, and it no longer flails away at the cpu.
On a side note, it's amusing how often people recommend an SMC reset for virtually every issue, large or small...
