Apple TV 3 as HomeKit Hub: cannot remotely access Bluetooth HomeKit Accessories after iPhone and iPad iOS 10 update

I have an Apple TV 3, and a couple iphones and ipad in our house. I have two HomeKit devices in the house: a Wifi device and a Bluetooth Schlage Sense door lock. With iOS 9, our iPhones and iPads could remotely monitor and control both HomeKit devices. After the iOS 10 update, remote access stopped working. In the new iOS 10 Home app, I could see the Apple TV in the Hubs section, but it said "Disabled".

During an Apple Support call, I was directed to delete my Home and start over. After doing this, I was able to see the Apple TV Hub as "Enabled". And I can once again remotely control and monitor the Wifi homekit device in our house, but I still cannot access the Bluetooth lock. I tried completely removing the lock from the HomeKit home, reset the lock, and went through the whole re-pairing process. I still cannot remotely control this Bluetooth connected HomeKit Accessory. Its as if the Bluetooth functionality of the Apple TV 3 has stopped working. The only change on the Apple TV 3 is that I signed out of iCloud, enabled two factor authentication, and the re-signed in successfully using the two factor auth.

I've spent a LOT of time and energy trying to restore this. Everything was working beautifully until I upgraded my devices to iOS 10.

it would appear that the fault is in schlage's recent firmware update. They posted the following on their web site on sept 18, 2016:

Some Schlage Sense customers have experienced a loss of remote access through the 3rd generation Apple TV after updating their lock to firmware version 3.42.

We're aware of the issue and are working quickly to resolve.

In the meantime, you can learn more details about how to set up an Apple TV and iPad for remote access and automation of your Schlage lock and other HomeKit accessories.

No, that MacRumors post was incorrect and they updated it with a correction. Apple TV 3 *is* supported as a HomeKit hub, but with limitations: it doesn't support cameras, HomeKit Automation or user permissions:

Update: Apple has published an updated support document to reflect the fact that the third-generation Apple TV works with remote access in iOS 10 (with the exception of HomeKit-enabled cameras), but does not support set-up of HomeKit automation or user permissions.
