iPhone7 Bluetooth issue in the car

My brand new Iphone7 seems to have bluetooth problems in my car. Everything works but the sound drops sometimes (often) when I listen to music. I didnt have this issue wiyh my 6s and IOS10. I tried to reset everything but the problem persists. The iPhone is recognized by the radio inmy Toyota, but the sound drops just as it was a radio in a tunnel.

I provided this to the techs weeks ago, but it seems like there was no headway. So here are the results of my trials for everyone to read:

I work in an environment where I have access to soundproof rooms. The walls are steel with padding and are about 6" thick (solid). These are "dead spots" for wireless in my building, which I surveyed and had to plan around because of the walls. I also work with deploying a lot of iOS devices, so most of my colleagues have an iPhone.

Testing environment:

I tested the area with an OptiView XG using AirMagnet Spectrum XT software. This device and software is used to measure the amount of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation in a given area to troubleshoot issues with wireless, and to help design wireless networks for large corporations. This helped me to ensure that there were no stray 2.4GHz interferers while testing, meaning that the only devices emitting 2.4GHz band RF were the "Devices" listed below (Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1) and the phones.

Additionally, I tested the cars listed below in several environments with and without interferers nearby. These were less controlled, however mirrored the exact same results.

Stuttering/Skipping:

To show an example of the skipping sound that I am referring to, please take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGHFDRVA958

Bluetooth devices tested:

  • Cars: 2013 Ford Focus, 2011 Toyota Venza, 2007 BMW 335i, 2006 VW Jetta
  • Devices: Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1

iPhones tested:

  • iPhone 6s - No problems
  • iPhone 6s Plus - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (T-Mobile, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Sprint, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 (Verizon, A1660) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • There were two other GSM iPhone 7 Pluses that I trialed, but I don't have the model numbers in front of me to list to provide exact details. Both had issues.

As you can see, the issues are localized to the GSM models using the new Intel modems. This further solidifies the belief that there is an existing hardware issue and not a problem with software, interference, or other manufacturer's devices. I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot with the Apple reps, but after spending upwards of $5000 with Apple in 2016, I can't help but to feel neglected.

I have a 2012 Honda Accord. Iphone7 10.0.2 I have re-set the car phone settings and deleted the phones reference to hondalink re-booted and re-paired. Still have intermittent connection issues. when trying to force the connection the car can see the phone but issues the message it is not available.. and then sometimes connects. Disappointing. Sometimes it disconnects after completing phone calls etc.

I hear ya, I thought for a second that the newest update 10.0.3 last night might have been the silver bullet... WRONG! I erased apple map since that always seem to interfere with the BT/Music combo when it is updating my location. My only suggestion is that we need to leave feedback on their website apple.com/feedback, the comments that are here although helpful in terms of acting as a support group... pretty much ends here, Apple support will NEVER acknowledge this problem until they get enough negative feedbacks on the link. I spoke to advisor supervisors on numerous occasions and they keep insisting its the firmware of the car and other issues while adamantly denying its an inherent apple issue, they went so far to suggest we should just be happy because our phones are not "blowing up like samsungs." Laughable! I am shocked cnnfn or cnbc hasn't done an expose on all these issues with iphones yet, maybe after the election...

i agree, that may be a temporary fix, but I'm just advocating for our rights as consumers. Instead of fixing or even acknowledging this flaw with the most expensive smart phone product on the market, Apple has chosen to ignore the problem or shift the blame onto others. Why should we as consumers have to navigate around this flaw when the seller won't even apologize or acknowledge the problem, we are enabling apple to further abuse their power and continue to market sub-par merchandise...

Agreed. I think at times Apple makes it even hard to use these forums or report problems to anyone that seems to care. Extremely disappointed. This forum always autocorrects my posts to make them less coherent (than normal?). My wife and I actually put off getting new Macs after our last 2 experiences with Apple (and really AppleCare). Without more media attention on such issues I am not sure if changes will happen soon.

I hate to play devil's advocate, but it's a new device. Every new device (regardless of manufacturer) will have bugs. This will likely (>90%) be fixed with a firmware update to the radio... Apple is huge, look at the forums... So many topics, they obviously have to prioritize their efforts. I don't know of any enterprise-level company that uses forum topics to report and respond to bugs... Most have a ticket system, feedback, etc...

If you want their attention, and for this to be addressed sooner than later, report it the proper way. Obviously this forum is great for community awareness, workarounds, and communication for users. It's also a great place to vent frustrations. But don't expect Apple to read every single rant-topic that pops up on their forums; regardless of how active it is.

I hope that everyone on this topic who has voiced their problem and frustration with this issue has also used their feedback system to report it. They're obviously working on releasing bug-fixes (e.g. 10.0.3) and have mildly reduced this bug with the Beta...

tl;dr use http://www.apple.com/feedback to report this problem as mentioned. 🙂

Here is the issue with your line of thinking. YES, its a new product. However Apple has set the bar very high when they REMOVE the headphone jack and force everyone to wireless.

Now, the only way that cars can connect to a phone is through bluetooth (I'm pretty sure but not 100 percent) so if there is an issue with the very technology that Apple has forced its dependence, well, then Apple needs to OWN the problem and FIX IT!
