iPhone7 Bluetooth issue in the car

My brand new Iphone7 seems to have bluetooth problems in my car. Everything works but the sound drops sometimes (often) when I listen to music. I didnt have this issue wiyh my 6s and IOS10. I tried to reset everything but the problem persists. The iPhone is recognized by the radio inmy Toyota, but the sound drops just as it was a radio in a tunnel.

I provided this to the techs weeks ago, but it seems like there was no headway. So here are the results of my trials for everyone to read:

I work in an environment where I have access to soundproof rooms. The walls are steel with padding and are about 6" thick (solid). These are "dead spots" for wireless in my building, which I surveyed and had to plan around because of the walls. I also work with deploying a lot of iOS devices, so most of my colleagues have an iPhone.

Testing environment:

I tested the area with an OptiView XG using AirMagnet Spectrum XT software. This device and software is used to measure the amount of Radio Frequency (RF) radiation in a given area to troubleshoot issues with wireless, and to help design wireless networks for large corporations. This helped me to ensure that there were no stray 2.4GHz interferers while testing, meaning that the only devices emitting 2.4GHz band RF were the "Devices" listed below (Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1) and the phones.

Additionally, I tested the cars listed below in several environments with and without interferers nearby. These were less controlled, however mirrored the exact same results.

Stuttering/Skipping:

To show an example of the skipping sound that I am referring to, please take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGHFDRVA958

Bluetooth devices tested:

  • Cars: 2013 Ford Focus, 2011 Toyota Venza, 2007 BMW 335i, 2006 VW Jetta
  • Devices: Beats Pill, Plantronics Backbeats, Braven BRV-1

iPhones tested:

  • iPhone 6s - No problems
  • iPhone 6s Plus - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (AT&T, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (T-Mobile, A1784) - Stuttering
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Sprint, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 (Verizon, A1660) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • iPhone 7 Plus (Verizon, A1661) - No problems
  • There were two other GSM iPhone 7 Pluses that I trialed, but I don't have the model numbers in front of me to list to provide exact details. Both had issues.

As you can see, the issues are localized to the GSM models using the new Intel modems. This further solidifies the belief that there is an existing hardware issue and not a problem with software, interference, or other manufacturer's devices. I'm not sure what else I can do to troubleshoot with the Apple reps, but after spending upwards of $5000 with Apple in 2016, I can't help but to feel neglected.

I have this issue with my iPhone 7 Plus and my 2016 RAV4 SE. I was at the dealer for the 5,000 mile service and had them check it out. He showed me a printout from their internal technician's system that shows that none of the newest iPhones have been tested yet with the Toyota systems and that when new phones come out there is almost always a short time where they have issues. He suggested to keep checking back and once they are tested there might be a firmware update (that they have to install via USB) to fix.

After three months of my new iPhone 7 not being able to play any music via Bluetooth in my 2010 mazda car, I finally have troubleshot something and it worked! This is taken me weeks and weeks of trying everything - even resetting my phone multiple times or unpairing my iOS device to my Bluetooth car system and repairing my phone and car. I had tried everything even hoping Apple updates to iOS 10 would work. The culprit? My Apple Watch.

Every time I was in my car, I would try to play music. Every single time, 30 seconds into the song it would get garbled and disconnect, reconnect, disconnect and inevitably would never work.

Finally I put my phone in airplane mode and turned Bluetooth back on. It worked. But I wasn't sold.

Then I turned my phone off of airplane mode and problem resurfaced. But what good is having an iPhone 7 in airplane mode just to listen to music in you car?

So I finally tried airplane mode for my watch (keeping my iPhone in normal operating mode) and it's been 2 full days and not one single issue. I think I've finally figured the most annoying and frustrating issue I've ever had with an apple device in my life.

Try it - if you have a watch this may be the issue!

I have an iPhone 7 running 10.2 and a 1st gen Apple Watch running OS 3.

I called Apple Customer Relations today. They noted this was not an issue they have heard of yet. I pointed them to this discussion and then things started to progress. At this point my iPhone 7 Plus on AT&T has been replaced and still has the same stuttering effect. To remedy the issue I have turned off LTE data. This has cleared things up, but I would rather use LTE versus 4G.

Further the stuttering is most effected when I move from wifi to LTE. This is usually when I pull away from my house an the LTE takes over. I have completed a master reset of my Ford Fusion 2012 Sync system and updated the system. Short of testing my theory of using a SIM free phone I don't believe that this issue will be resolved, but I am hopeful the support tech will help bring light to this issue.

I am also curious if anyone on T-Mobile or Sprint have had this issue. I have only seen Verizon and AT&T iPhone Plus users post here. Anyway I hope you all the best of luck.

I've given up on Apple fixing this issue as they won't even acknowledge it exists, even though I've reported it to support numerous times.

I decided to go back to the last 6s plus I bought (it was only $30) and return my 7 while my window was still open. It leaves me upgrade-eligible and It gives me more time to look for a replacement.

I'm considering switching to Samsung but I have concerns about the glass back on their Galaxy 7 phone. Hear it cracks easily. And they are considering removing the earphone jack on their next version.

I'm also hearing that Apple might use a glass back as well on their 8 phone. If that happens, both companies will have no earphone jack and both will have glass case backs.

I'm not happy about either, so I'm just going to wait it out. I'll have to turn off Bluetooth in my car in the meantime because I can't stand that garbled voice effect.
