Issues about video stabilization - iPhone 7 plus

Hello everyone,

I am, as most of you, an Apple enthusiast. I work as a frelance videographer. I use Apple products every day. I am about to buy the new iPhone, but there are some issues I am worried about. I saw some videos with the new iPhone 7 plus, and it seems like the video stabilization it's its just too bad. As the person walks, the camera is allways struggling to stabilize the footage, and it gives a very bad video Look/quality. It seems like the video is allways glitching.

I can't be the only one who notice this issue. Please help! Do you know if its possible to turn off?? That will probably solve that glitch.

Best regards

I just shot some test footage on my iPhone 8 with and without the Smooth Q gimbal. I thought the bobbing and/or strobe effect was caused by the camera, but it was only pronounced in the footage I shot with the Smooth Q, not with the handheld footage. Osmo users are having the same problem. It's either caused by 1) the built-in video stabilization fighting the gimbal or 2) not using the Ninja technique for walking. Or, possibly a combination of both.

Ive just got my first gimbal, a Smooth-Q. I got it as I want to get in to video more, and have an iPhone 8Plus, which i got for its improved camer and video support.

Now I’ve read a bit more about all this OIS stuff I’m glad I kept my 6S. I was going to sell it but I think ill keep it as a camera only for the Gimbal. It works better anyway as it’s lighter so its all good.

It would be nice if there was an on/off setting for the OIS, but I would think that would cause more issues if people messed about with it and forgot to turn it back on. I’d expect the number of Gimbal users to be very, very low compared to the people who hand hold video. Apple hasn’t designed their phones to work with 3rd party accessories after all.

One other workaround is to use the Tele lens, which of course isn’t stabilised, and maybe a WA lens on it. Not the real solution but if you like the phone enough its one that would allow you to keep it. Personaly I won’t be using mine on a Gimbal, its too much hassle taking it out of its case each time, and the Smooth-Q isn’t the easiest thing to put a phone in, but I have the luxury of two phones.

I went to the genius bar, same thing, they've never heard of it before...

They changed the rear camera, the problem is still here.

They offered me a replacement with a new iPhone 7, but i tried the rear camera on 5 new iPhone with them, they all have the same problem, the OIS is ******.

The previous models don't have this problem because they have digital stabilizers, same as the front camera.

How can nobody have seen this problem that is so huge ?

I guess people only make videos while standing still.

Similar to and probably yes

The inability to lock down the OIS on iPhones that have it means that gimbals which attempt to compensate for camera motion cannot counter the free movement if the optical lenses in cameras with OIS because even with OIS odd the lenses can still move when the phone is jostled. This manifests as slight jarring in footsteps with gimbal usage.

OIS is useful for lower light situations and still photography but the compromise is the movable lenses that cannot be locked I to place in apples implem is that somebody odd effects happen on footsteps.

I also have this issue with my phone and I am very disappointed about it. You described the problem very well, thank you.

Lots of wiggling on video recordings when mounted on my dash and never mind turning up my subwoofer... the music bass wiggles the image as if it was some kind of weird water wave effect lol... I can’t believe there is almost no reference to this issue online. I mean this phone is been out for a while so there is been plenty of time for the world to play w it by now... and the camera was supposed to be one of its biggest super hits. How come almost no one is complaining about this??

So this is a hardware issue that can't be resolved with a software update? If that is correct, I'm returning my 8 plus today. My wife's Note 8 video is smooth as can be, no weird strobe or shifting. I did a side by side test, as long as I'm not walking and just panning back and forth the Iphone is fine, once I start to walk, it falls apart. The Note 8 is great either way.
