On my MBP, 2011, menu bar in recovery mode offer only one option - Language Chooser. How do I access Terminal? Is something missing?

But when I click the language selector nothing happens

I can definitely confirm that booting from a bootable usb did show me the other menus including Terminal...once. After that I've never seen it again. While I manage to do what I need to do with the terminal ( fixing the **** kernal_task cramping all of the cpu power), I didn't have to chance to turn the SIP back on. Luckily I only have to do this once a year when the new OS comes.

I like the picture in picture and siri so much that I have to update.

If you see only Language Chooser option, try pressing Ctrl+F2 - the expected menu should appear and you should be able to navigate to Disk Utility or Terminal.
