iphone7 attempting data recovery
Not sure what happened. I was talking on my new iphone 7 and it turned off and restarted. Now it is saying "attempting data recovery". I was upgrading to 10.01 from 10.0
Mac OS X (10.7)

My iPhone 7 had the same issue, twice:
1) Update from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 by iTunes after restore from an iPhone 6 backup
2) Update from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 by iTunes but with no backup restore
*Windows 10
The "attempting data recovery" screen took a relatively long time(maybe 10 minutes), and it followed a prompt "press home to recover".
During the process, iTunes was giving a message called "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode" and did nothing revolves data restore/recovery.
When the update completed, my iPhone seemed to be back to normal.
Although English is not my native language, the words "attempting" and "recovery" bothered me, sounds like there was some "failure" occurred, I searched the web and found nothing, I think maybe this is new from iOS 10.
I will appreciate it if someone can give some information about why this is happening.
Thanks!

P.S. There was no any failure appeared on iTunes side except the passcode thing, iTunes status:
Extracting software ->
Backing up iPhone 7 ->
Preparing iPhone for software update ->
verifying updated iPhone software ->
Updating iPhone software ->
verifying updated iPhone software(again)->
Updating iPhone firmware->
iTunes could not connect to the iPhone... , at the same time, "attempting data recovery" happened on iPhone side.
Does anyone have the answer of how to fix this? my phone has been showing this for the last 16 hours and i only brought it yesterday.
I need to get it fixed ASAP
What carrier are you using? I have at&t and have no carrier update past 25.0.
Thanks for the information. This really seems to point to a bug. If this is standard then they should change the message from "Attempting Data Recovery" to "Finishing Installation".
Verizon, 25.1
This is kinda freaky. These updates with the recovery are taking longer than previous updates. I would've thought Apple would've had this issue fixed. Maybe they will in 10.1?
Happened here when going from 10.0.2 to 10.0.3 on an iphone 7 plus 128gig with encrypted backup. Connected to iTunes, running Windows 10 x64.
Thank you.
Your answer was very helpful for me.
Had it suddenly ref useto acknowledge Touch ID while training it (it learns as you use it) but no flat out freeze yet.
Yes, my iPhone7 is working great after updating to 10.0.3.
Hi
I got excatly the same as you got when update through iTunes
I expect better answer from APPLE about this.
how come this becomes "normal" when update
Same problem exactly here too. I suspect Apple doesn't know why this happens and therefore hasn't fixed it...yet.
I'm having this same issue. anyone have the solution? I've force closed and restarted after waiting on the attempting data recovery screen keeps restarting.
I Update the iPhone via wifi and the attempting to recover data dosent appear
I also noticed about a half hour ago that all of my sounds have reset to default. Ugh.
I can also confirm that updating from 10.1 to 10.1.1 on iTunes 12.5.3 on Windows 10 x64 did not have the "attempting data recovery" screen.
Hoping this is finally fixed. Hoping...
