iphone7 attempting data recovery

Not sure what happened. I was talking on my new iphone 7 and it turned off and restarted. Now it is saying "attempting data recovery". I was upgrading to 10.01 from 10.0

Mac OS X (10.7)

My iPhone 7 had the same issue, twice:

1) Update from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 by iTunes after restore from an iPhone 6 backup

2) Update from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 by iTunes but with no backup restore

*Windows 10

The "attempting data recovery" screen took a relatively long time(maybe 10 minutes), and it followed a prompt "press home to recover".

During the process, iTunes was giving a message called "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode" and did nothing revolves data restore/recovery.

When the update completed, my iPhone seemed to be back to normal.

Although English is not my native language, the words "attempting" and "recovery" bothered me, sounds like there was some "failure" occurred, I searched the web and found nothing, I think maybe this is new from iOS 10.

I will appreciate it if someone can give some information about why this is happening.

Thanks!

P.S. There was no any failure appeared on iTunes side except the passcode thing, iTunes status:

Extracting software ->

Backing up iPhone 7 ->

Preparing iPhone for software update ->

verifying updated iPhone software ->

Updating iPhone software ->

verifying updated iPhone software(again)->

Updating iPhone firmware->

iTunes could not connect to the iPhone... , at the same time, "attempting data recovery" happened on iPhone side.

The "attempting data recovery" has happened to me twice now on my iPhone 7, but not on my iPad (mini 3). The first time it took over an hour to complete and seemed fine. Last night when I upgraded to 10.1 it took about 40 minutes but a bunch of settings were changed or completely missing (for example, Bedtime and all of my alarms to wake up in the morning were turned off? Also, all of my notifications were turned off. I had to go through and reset each one).

I have a twitter DM going on with Apple Support right now and they are acting like they never heard of this before. Asking me for step by step descriptions of everything that happened, photos, etc. (Thank goodness for this thread! I didn't take notes but other replies have been so helpful). I'll update as our DM progresses.

Oh, to the last reply above me, I have been having many odd things happening since I updated 10.0.3. White screens in iMessage, browser window freezing, etc. Things that continue to happen since updating to 10.1 last night.

I'm doing the same thing with the Twitter DMs! Thanks for reminding me about the alarms - mine were also all switched off after the update. Re notifications - they haven't worked until I've opened each app for the first time since the update. I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting my football scores when the notifications were (seemingly) switched on, but once I opened that particular app, they started to appear again!

Just updated to 10.1.1 from 10.1 and it appears to be fixed now. Things that I noticed:

1. Was prompted to unlock Phone BEFORE install began. Previous installs just began.

2. I didn't have any white screen at all on iPhone 7. On other devices it would say press home to complete. Just got prompt to unlock and it was complete after progress bar completed.

I suspect that the last update to iTunes included a fix. I am running 12.5.2.36

Can someone else confirm?

If i had to guess, it is to do with the fact that you didn't input the passcode beforehand (it didn't ask) and with the newest version of itunes, OR the 10.1 update, or the 10.1.1 update (I think it was the itunes update but I can't be sure) they fixed that problem. It now asks (for me from 10.1 to 10.1.1 on itunes 12.5.3.16) for a passcode before it starts. Another guess, it is to do with the "extra" security after the FBI vs APPLE thing, so that any unauthorized update EVEN from apple, without the proper passcode to begin with, will have an issue with recovering any encrypted data. So as to protect us from any order for apple to unlock or modify anything without the passcode. This is my guess I welcome thoughts on it.
