iphone7 attempting data recovery

Not sure what happened. I was talking on my new iphone 7 and it turned off and restarted. Now it is saying "attempting data recovery". I was upgrading to 10.01 from 10.0

Mac OS X (10.7)

My iPhone 7 had the same issue, twice:

1) Update from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 by iTunes after restore from an iPhone 6 backup

2) Update from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 by iTunes but with no backup restore

*Windows 10

The "attempting data recovery" screen took a relatively long time(maybe 10 minutes), and it followed a prompt "press home to recover".

During the process, iTunes was giving a message called "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode" and did nothing revolves data restore/recovery.

When the update completed, my iPhone seemed to be back to normal.

Although English is not my native language, the words "attempting" and "recovery" bothered me, sounds like there was some "failure" occurred, I searched the web and found nothing, I think maybe this is new from iOS 10.

I will appreciate it if someone can give some information about why this is happening.

Thanks!

P.S. There was no any failure appeared on iTunes side except the passcode thing, iTunes status:

Extracting software ->

Backing up iPhone 7 ->

Preparing iPhone for software update ->

verifying updated iPhone software ->

Updating iPhone software ->

verifying updated iPhone software(again)->

Updating iPhone firmware->

iTunes could not connect to the iPhone... , at the same time, "attempting data recovery" happened on iPhone side.

Some kind of Apple software bug. Happened to me upgrading from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 and from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2. No data loss, but quite a bit of wasted time. Interestingly, since I upgraded iTunes for Windows to the latest version (12.5.1.21), it crashes every time I try to close it. On multiple computers, both Win 8.1 and Win 10. I have serious doubts about the competence of Apple's programmers and especially their software QA people.

This happened on my brand new 7 Plus. I restored this from an iphone 6 backup on a windows 10 machine using the current itunes version 12.xx

my phone did the same thing to me tonight updating via itunes on this computer - annoying and scary.. especially AFTER it crashed earlier tonight while taking an indoor picture in low light.. I'm sick to my stomach that my $969 phone is acting this way.. I'll go back to my 6 or get a 6 Plus, because this is crazy

Just updated to 10.0.3 from 10.0.2 with same "Attempting data recovery" step when updating via iTunes.

I am not sure what to say to people that get stuck on that step. It does take a long time on this step. This does not occur on any other devices other than the iPhone 7.

I am suspicious that the encryption option in iTunes is the cause of this issue. Are other people using encrypted backups?

Update:

Finally got a hold of Apple via their twitter @AppleSupport. The Tech tried several times to either blame my backup or the PC. Once I explained that my initial 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 was with a phone that was setup as new & that my iPhone 6 (before I sold it) updated from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 without the "Attempting Data Recovery" message he stated this issue would be forwarded to the engineering team.

Unfortunately I have no way to track the issue after that call. I really feel like I got the run-around to be honest. Guess I'll find out when 10.1 drops...

I've sent this thread along with the video (thank you to whoever made that!) directly to Apple Support and they are looking into it now - I'll update if I hear anything new.

It's definitely just affecting phones updated via iTunes - but seeing as though that is my preferred method of updating, I'd really like to get it sorted, instead of accepting 'just use wifi' as a solution!
