iphone7 attempting data recovery
Not sure what happened. I was talking on my new iphone 7 and it turned off and restarted. Now it is saying "attempting data recovery". I was upgrading to 10.01 from 10.0
Mac OS X (10.7)

My iPhone 7 had the same issue, twice:
1) Update from 10.0.0 to 10.0.1 by iTunes after restore from an iPhone 6 backup
2) Update from 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 by iTunes but with no backup restore
*Windows 10
The "attempting data recovery" screen took a relatively long time(maybe 10 minutes), and it followed a prompt "press home to recover".
During the process, iTunes was giving a message called "iTunes could not connect to the iPhone because it is locked with a passcode" and did nothing revolves data restore/recovery.
When the update completed, my iPhone seemed to be back to normal.
Although English is not my native language, the words "attempting" and "recovery" bothered me, sounds like there was some "failure" occurred, I searched the web and found nothing, I think maybe this is new from iOS 10.
I will appreciate it if someone can give some information about why this is happening.
Thanks!

P.S. There was no any failure appeared on iTunes side except the passcode thing, iTunes status:
Extracting software ->
Backing up iPhone 7 ->
Preparing iPhone for software update ->
verifying updated iPhone software ->
Updating iPhone software ->
verifying updated iPhone software(again)->
Updating iPhone firmware->
iTunes could not connect to the iPhone... , at the same time, "attempting data recovery" happened on iPhone side.
Hi, My iPhone 7 just did exactly the same.
Crashed after it downloaded iOS 10.0.1 during the verification stage.
Took an age to 'Recover Data' but all seems OK now and phone reports iOS version as 10.0.1 in settings.
Phone was restored from an iPhone 5 backup.
This is exactly what happened to me as well. Also on Windows 10, my original backup was from my 5s. Then from 10.0.1 to .2 the exact same. A little worrisome considering it has occurred twice now, but everything seems fine after updating. Very strange. I may try restoring from backup and doing an OTA update.
Brand new iPhone 7... backed up up my iPhone 6s. Restored it to the iPhone 7. All apps came up as "waiting...". Upgraded to 10.0.2 via cable, part way through, the iPhone 7 went into "attempting data recovery". Progress bar took about 2 hours to complete but it then came up is 10.0.2. All of my apps are still in a "waiting..." state. 😟
i have really an issue the iPhone 7 plus is after auto recovery and downloading latest iOS just looping in "Attempting data recovery" and then it shows "click home button" and enter passcode, reenter passcode and then it starts allover again "Attempting data recovery". How do i get out of here, did anyone experience this ?
iPhone7 256GB tried to update to 10.0.3 today while plugged into iTunes. Said it was downloading update then when I returned a while later the process had stopped and the phone said "Attempting data recovery" white screen with black apple logo; it's usually black screen with white logo. This took about 10 mins to complete. Phone "seems" to be ok.
Apple what did I do wrong apart from buy one of your dodgy products?
Same problem as the rest of you. IOS 10 updates on a 7 Plus received on the first delivery day. Windows 10 fully upgraded, as is iTunes. Encrypted backup to computer. Updates done via iTunes. Originally restored new phone from 6S backup in iTunes.
I get the error "attempting data recovery" on each update. It worries me every time, as I never know if my expensive new iPhone is going to brick itself. However, it does then go through the recovery and password verification and my phone begins working.
C'mon, Apple - fix this!
Updated from 10.0.3 to 10.1 and the "Attempting data recovery" step is still there. I don't see this getting fixed until a new version of iTunes is released. It isn't a case of firmware problem but rather how itunes is installing the firmware since OTA works without issues.
Yes. OTA (Over The Air/Wifi) updates do not have this problem. But it does exist for all Window machines (OS 7/10) that connect via cable to iTunes and an iPhone 7.
It is still a bug that Apple should correct.
Same issue while upgrading to 10.0.2.
This occurred on all my iphone7 devices. This recovering step does not happen on any of other devices. Is this a known step or something that needs to be investigated?
Please check you old/new passcodes.. You must enter the correct one in. To my understanding it trying to verify you and your data with the passcode. But I could be wrong.
THis has nothing to do with passcodes and everything to do with a risk of data corruption by the iOS 10 update process.
Try updating over wifi instead of via iTunes. That worked for me.
So this morning I decided to update from iOS 10.0.1 to 10.0.2 but this time did it over the air (i.e. using software update in the iPhone settings) rather than using iTunes.
It worked perfectly - no 'attempting data recovery' or any other issues.
BTW I run iTunes on windows 10 with the anniversary update.
Same with me the first time when I got the phone when doing update then when I was doing the update for the headphone problem. I don't like this at ALL ."attempting data recovery" Two times in a week with a new $1000 phone is not good.
