I want to use Siri on my 2013 Mac Pro but there's no inbuilt microphone.

Great so Siri is now enabled on a desktop with Sierra. How do I add a microphone to Apple's flagship computer, the Mac Pro 2013 in a cost effective manner? There isn't even a mic socket! Please help!

Does your Mac have an earphone socket? Then try an Apple Earphone with an integrated microphone.

I am seeing this in the tech specs for Mac Pro: http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

Combined optical digital audio output/analog line out minijack

3.5 mm headphone jack with headset support

The headphone Jack would allow to connect an Apple Headset.

Or use any bargain priced USB microphone for speech input.

The headphone port of the MacBook Retina 13", Mid 2014 has support for the Apple iPhone headset, see: https://support.apple.com/kb/sp703?locale=en_US

Any plug with the three black rings will do to separate the microphone and line-out.

Headphone port

  • Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
  • Support for audio line out (digital/analog)

And that means, it can be used to connect an input splitter like this one:

You could also use an audio interface like the iMic.

It will turn a USB port into a line-in port:

I hope so. Test it with an Apple iPhone headset with a microphone, if you have it. If both the mic and the earbuds are working for such a combination, the input splitter should work.

You can also check the output in the System report for your Mac.

  • Click the -menu > About this Mac, then click System Report in the About panel.
  • Click Hardware in the sidebar, then Audio. Does it show "Combination Output"?
