Turning off hardware acceleration in Chrome advanced settings did not work for me. Plus, although it's installed, I have never used Chrome since forever. I can switch into additional desktops via swipe-up for mission control, but launching a full screen app or trying to swipe directly to a desktop (or using ctrl + L/R arrow) causes the same log-out glitch every time. Uninstalling Chrome altogether doesn't work either.

Yes. There was a thread on Reddit about the Chrome preferences fix working but it was only for people who were crashing while watching video in Chrome; it is not a general fix and may be a fix for a different problem. It did not work for me for this problem and, like some others, I rarely used Chrome anyway.

I am getting the exact same WindowServer crash report as Travholt noted yesterday. I have set up a test account that has no problems with Space switching via swiping (I can also switch using Mission Control, as noted by CorkPine MacAddict) or going to full screen videos or windows, none of which works (it crashes to the login screen) on my own account. I've sent logs to Apple and am awaiting a reply, though I'm not holding my breath. Nevertheless, the support consultant who's helping me calls me every few days so I haven't given up hope and, clearly, there are a lot of people with this problem.

I'm also trying to add stuff to my test account, one step at a time, to make it identical to my regular account, in order to find the software conflict. Right now, I'm focusing on Cisco AnyConnect Secure Client, Adobe Creative Cloud, CleanMyMac 3, and Cocktail. I'm hopeful that, eventuallly, activating one of these will break my test account. In the worst case scenario, my plan is to simply migrate all of my documents, etc., to a new user account, since this is clearly a problem at the User, rather than system, level.

I'm sure anyone who comes up with a solution will post it here.

I also have Adobe Creative Cloud and Cocktail, but the problem persists even when those apps aren't running. In fact, closing all apps does not help.

I also wanted to mention that I (in desperation) tried deleting all found com.apple.windowserver.plist and corresponding .lockfiles in ~/Library (there were several with added random numbers in the filename) and System/Library. When I deleted in the latter folder and rebooted, my Mac didn't start up but stopped with a black screen and fans on full blast. (It was a long shot anyways, but I didn't think it would be such a bad thing to do.) Booted in recovery mode and reinstalled Sierra, but the problem has not gone away.

I am experiencing a similar issue ever since I installed Sierra. However I haven't experienced it with taking any programs to full screen, but seems more random than that. It does sometimes happen after the 3-finger swipe to spaces, but sometimes not. Things will briefly lock up, screen freezes with the entire thing taking on a whiteish-blue hue, then screen goes black for about 5-10 secs, then takes me back to login screen. Upon logging in again, all the programs I had open reload (with the exception of Fusion 8 running Windows 7, which I must completely restart), but I never get any error messages. However it does happen several times a day and is rather frustrating for my productivity. Also, happens regardless of if I have an external monitor connected or not.

MBP, 13", mid-2012

8GB RAM, 500 GB original HDD

Nothing else particularly special or unique

MS Office for Mac 2011 used almost consistently

Typically use Safari web browser

Fusion 8.5 running Windows 7 (eating 3GB of 8GB total RAM, ran fairly cleanly under El Capitan)

Interested to see how this turns out and Apple's response. Following. Thanks.

I can confirm this problem. Ever since the Sierra update sometimes (but not always) when I fullscreen a Video in Chrome (Netflix or Youtube for instance) I will be thrown to the lock screen. After logging back in the system is in a strange state. Some of the apps are being restarted but ssh sessions in iTerm for instance are still active and I can continue to work on a remote system I was previously logged in to. So it seems like not all processes are being killed.

When I play the same Video on Safari I can fullscreen it all I want. I'm also playing full screen video in Plex Media Player and haven't had it happen there either.

I have not had it happen when switching Desktop spaces and other than Video I usually don't fullscreen apps so can't comment on this.

Hi all,

Having the same exact issue since I have updated to Sierra:

1> Changing Spaces randomly logs me out and closes all apps.

2> Switching videos to fullscreen randomly logs me out and closes all apps.

Hardware is:

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2014)

1.7 GHz Intel Core i7

8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

Although, as mentioned in other posts, I have created a 'new' temporary account and this issue does not happen when using that temporary account, so Apple need to fix this so I can use all my original Apps etc etc.

Lastly, I have performed a 'fresh' install on a blank hard drive and all worked ok, and then I used Migration assistant to pull over all my apps and my original log-in account and this has now set me back to square one!

So it would appear that the issue is clearly a problem when mixing an old 'original' user account and its apps and settings with the new macOS....Help is required!

  • I have been having the same problem. It will expand a window to full screen, but as soon as I change spaces or try to shrink the window back, it logs out. I tried every fix I can think of, and yes, it doesn't happen in the dummy account. It does happen in every application. Like all of the rest posting here, I'd love to hear about a fix.

Some people having difficulty primarily with fullscreen in Chrome have had it resolve by disabling hardware acceleration in the Chrome advanced preferences, then rebooting. If your problem is primarily with video in Chrome, you may want to try this.

For those of us with more general problems, such as it happening with Space swiping and even taking a Finder window to fullscreen, the Chrome fix doesn't appear to help.

I just got off the phone with Apple Support. Someone from Apple Engineering, who works in "investigation" (his word), called me a few days ago and set up an appointment for today. He shared my screen and had me run some diagnostics in Terminal, then send him a rather large report. I had previously sent a different, but equally large (500+ MB), report, destined for Apple Engineering, to my primary Apple Support person almost two weeks ago. He had previously escalated the issue to Engineering.

So, it appears Apple is definitely aware of this issue affecting a lot of users. It does also appear to be something at the User account level since, at least for many, setting up a test account and switching spaces/going to fullscreen in that account doesn't lead to the crash. Hopefully, I will hear from Apple Support this week. I have not given up yet and I will post any possible solution or recommendation when available.

Ahh, very glad to hear that Apple is on this ball!

I never knew I used full screen so many times daily! Even now that I know my Mac will crash, I sometimes take videos full screen without thinking twice, or even noticing.

Fortunately, I noticed that if I'm quick enough after logging in again, I might manage to close the restored, fullscreened window before it enters a state where it logs me out again.
