Epson XP-760 Scan error -9923

When I try to use either Image capture or the scan button in the System Preferences, Printer dialogue I get the message unable to communicate with the scanner (-9923). Epson own scanner software will see and use the scanner but not the native OS X software.

I need this as I use some PDF OCR software, as the poor Epson software fails to OCR the PDF files it generates.

I connect the XP-760 printer/scanner via Wi-Fi but the same occurs even if connected by Ethernet.

Epson support does not want to know!

Cheers xxMikeBxx - I'd tried lots of other things, and sadly you're right - only the brute force of re-installing Sierra fixed this.

(I got the error after installing a replacement Epson printer because the first one, which had worked well as a scanner, was faulty. Apple need to fix this, because adding an identical printer shouldn't warrant having to re-install the OS!)

I've had this happen with a different Mac and an HP printer.
Now, again with my Mac and an Epson printer (weirdest part - on both occasions it was working fine until it wasn't).

I love my Mac, but the printer support is very faulty.

From your post, though, thank you for the idea of deleting the printer-related software.
I deleted the Epson apps that I had installed and that did the trick for me.

Hi 🙂 I'm getting the communication error -9923 when I try to scan (printing is fine) after we changed our router/modem due to NBN being installed. I have tried everything above except re-installing Sierra. Can I reinstall without losing all my files/settings etc? I really don't want to have to go down that path if I can avoid it. Alas, nothing else has worked. The scan function works fine on my husband's Windows PC, so I know it's not the printer's fault. Interestingly, I can get it to scan using the Epson software, downloaded from their website, but it's a very clunky program.

Hi - you always need to ensure you've got a full back up (e.g. Time Machine), before doing any updates. I seem to recall from mine I was able to the re-install without losing anything. I think it works in much the same way that doing an update to the next version of Mac works, and leaves all your data and settings alone. Seems like using a sledgehammer to crack a nut, but it worked for me.

I had the same problem with my Macbook Pro 2016.

I just did all you've suggested, except the three last steps (reinstall of Sierra, the NVRAM and SMC reset) and it worked here, thanks!!

I tried to scan, it asked to download the driver and it works again.

I'm reinstalling now the Canon softwares, and hope it will remain working fine...

Thanks a lot!

Well here's an interesting development. Even after reinstalling the OS and doing all of the above steps, I still could not get my iMac to communicate with the Epson WF-7610 scanner (printing is fine - no hassles). However, by chance I happened to be connected to a VPN for work and tried the scanner tab in the printer/scanner settings and what do you know, it allowed the scanner to communicate with my computer. So I tried disconnecting from the VPN thinking it was fixed, but then it went right back to a communication error -9923. So I connected to the VPN once more and then it was able to communicate!

So... there is obviously something dodgy within my new NBN router/modem and the way it talks to my iMac. It's allowing access to print, but not to scan. Weird. It doesn't happen on my husband's Windows PC. He is able to both print and scan over the network without having to connect to a VPN and has no troubles with the printer working at all. He can even set up a network folder on his computer and access it directly from the printer to scan into, but I cannot do the same with my iMac.

Surely, it must have something to do with permissions? I wouldn't know where to start. I 'allowed all devices' in the router, but not even that worked. Anybody with networking prowess, please feel free to chime in! I feel like I'm right on the verge of solving the problem, but lack the knowledge to fix it once and for all.

Coincidentally I'm sharing an office with a graphic designer, who last week also couldn't scan from his Epson printer to his 2015 MBP. He eventually discovered that using an ethernet cable to an older MBP worked. The 2015 MBP has no ethernet socket, so he bought an adapter and now his Epson will print and scan to his 2015 MBP, but only through the ethernet cable, not through a USB.

On that basis, I'm still inclined to think it's a flaw in the Mac software, rather than your router.

Hi xxMikeBxx,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that when you try to use either Image Capture of the scan button in the System Preferences Printer section, you get an error message that says unable to communicate with the scanner (-9923). I know how critical it is to be able to scan and print in a reliable manner from your Mac. I have something that I would like you to try.

I see that you are currently running OS X 10.7.2 on your Mac. Please use the article Update the software on your Mac to update your Mac to OS X 10.7.5. Once you have updated and restarted your computer, please test and see if you get this error message again.

For additional information, please see Mac Basics: Using a scanner

Cheers!

Oh dear, I forgot to update my products signature! Just shows how few problems I ever have!

But you could have guessed, if posted in the macOS Sierra section, my problems are with the latest OS.

This also occurs on my 6 month old MacBook 11" but does not happen on my Wife's MacBook Pro that is still on Yosemite, so it looks like Apple has some work to do fixing the Epson scan driver.

After a lot of trying many things I now have it working again! As I tried so many things I am not 100% sure about the actual fix only that it needed a lot of work! However, try the following:

Turn off your printer.

Delete the printer in System Preferences.

Delete any software relating to the printer/scanner you installed.

In Finder select your hard drive and go to Library - Printers - PPDs - Contents - Resources and delete the files for your printer. Also delete the file with your printers name under Library - Printers. Also look under Library - Image Capture - Devices and delete your scanner.

Now reboot you Mac but enter recovery mode (Command + R) and use the option to re-install Sierra. Once complete and you are logged back shut down and perform a NVRAM (PRAM) reset and a SMC reset. When complete turn on your printer/scanner again. Now add the printer/scanner from System Preferences. It will take longer than normal as it will need to download the drivers from Apple. Now see if it works. Mine needed one extra re-boot before it sprung back into life!
